Layton and Harper had a private meeting in Harper's office today as reported on CBC Party and Politics... The meeting lasted about 45 minutes...

Now we'll see how badly Harper wants an election OR how badly Layton doesn't want one... :lol:

NDP takes corporate tax cut off the table. So what was that about the NDP standing up for principles?

The NDP won't be winning or losing any votes with people who vote for the Tories. Their gains or losses are with the Greens and Liberals, and the Greens have no seats to be taken. If Layton is backing away from an election, it will because he sees Ignatieff as less than vulnerable. He has little or nothing to get from Harper.

I wonder how long Handsome jack can survive with the NDP if he fails to grow the brand this time out?

The government should do something.

Wow a real opposition leader sees the writing of Tory Majority on the wall and tries to strike a deal instead of being put through 4 years of Harper Majority. I wish the Liberals would think of something like this instead of never asking for anything.

I doubt Harper will give Layton what he wants but you gotta try.

Bahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Hilarious. Now it's the NDP saving us from a boogie man majority that will never happen. Too funny.

doesn't seem like much to ask for letting people use more heating oil... not much an effect by the time it hits in march -this year. == winter will already be over for well all but northern Canada by the end of march.

are people still using heating oil, I thought most people would have switch to natural gas by now.

That is one of four demands the big one the poison pill the NDP went into the negotiation with, the one they will say they asked for when the Liberals weren't even thinking about it is the pension reform. They are framing because they know Alberta is against it big time.

Yah the Liberals are only down to the conservatives by 12 points, and if last election tells us anything of their strength they will finish lower in the polls than when they start.

As someone who mostly votes NDP federally, is this list of demands really that reasonable if taxes are also going to be lowered and we have a serious deficit to deal with?

I think these were costed out to about 700 million dollars extra which is less then the billion dollars the Conservatives "found" about a month ago that would have helped out with that Quebec area. However the biggest part of it the restructing of the Pension will actually cost nothing however no one will bite on that one anyway.

pull the trigger.

Don't need to with polling this good. Better to Govern like it already is a majority, and force the opposition to vote down something that will burn them in an election that they force on themselves.

Jack Layton has come to his senses and will not trigger an election. He knows that his party will be blown out of the water and will lose seats. He doesn't want to be to blamed for a Tory majority landslide victory so he's doing everything he can to keep the current government in power.

In front of the camera he's all bluster but in private he's kissing the Prime Ministers ass.

Don't be too sure about Jac. Remember, he was the one who created the election for 2005-06, that help Harper come into power. Jack can throw Harper under the bus too.,

Harper has nothing to lose and everything to gain from an election. The other two parties have the most to lose.

Thanks for adding that link...

Most Canadians know full well that Layton and the NDP are all about putting members into parliament, so if things aren't looking good for the NDP they'll "sell out" their principals (which they really never have) for a penny every TIME...

- A senior NDP official said that in exchange for this concession, Mr. Layton’s conditions will have to be met if the NDP is to support the budget.

“For us to not want [corporate tax cuts] taken out in this budget, the balance of the package is going to have to be very good,” the official said. “That’s why there is little or no room to bargain down from our proposal today.”

The NDP Leader’s shopping list is modest in length but could be costly in practice. It includes:

- Removing the federal sales tax from home heating bills and restoring the EcoEnergy Retrofit program;

- Increasing the Guaranteed Income Supplement for low-income seniors;

- Expanding the Canada Pension Plan;

- Hiring more family doctors.

“Our talks were cordial and respectful,” Mr. Layton said in a statement. “The Prime Minister offered no assurances, but I am confident that my proposals were received and well understood.”

Dimitri Soudas, Mr. Harper’s communications director, issued a statement describing the meeting as “a positive sharing of views.” -

Should be interesting how Layton and NDPers will be spining these items, which esentially are ALWAYS "on the table", for ANY government in power, as "their ideas" if/or when a government implements them and how Layton "forced the government to implement them... :lol:

It is to laugh how "consistant" NDPers are...

It's always prudent to remember how quickly things can change in Canadian elections once Canadians REALIZE there's something's going on and start paying attention...

A 20 point "swing" in an election is hardly unheard of...

The Harper government is governing with the support of roughly 1/3 of voter support meening that 2/3 of voters are AGAINST the Harper goverment, fairly standard numbers for Canada, I wouldn't bet against it once the Liberals trot out the Harper record in ernest...

In NB, surprisingly, not many people at all use NG. Most homes use either electric baseboard heating, wood heating or oil. Forced air furnaces are not all that common either. It's odd.

Say what you want about Layton, but the man goes to bat for his people, even if he will never be Prime Minister. Whether successful in his attempts or not, he seems to go out of his way to get his party's plans put through. You gotta respect that.

The man is a good party leader for sure, I would never say he wasn't. He has great charisma, he connects with people. Trust me , I wish Harper had half of his charisma, the Tories would have a majority by now if he did. I just hate his politics and look upon the NDP in general as communists, socialists and basically traitors to Canada.

To be fair almost every government in Canada, even most majorities throughout our history, has only had 1/3 electorate support.

Oh well...I have to disagree with the obvious spin that is going on.

I believe that this is a smart move by Layton. First, the four issues that the NDP want in return for not voting against the tax cuts are relevant to many within Canada. For example, cutting the taxes off home heating could save a lot of money for Canada's families. Let's say one's heating bill is $500; well the taxes would be $65. Multiply this by the 12 months a year and this would be quite the savings (and yes I know that the bill wouldn't be as expensive in the Summertime but this is just an example). This is a tangible saving that families and individuals can see and would allow savings to go into such things as groceries, or gas. The other issues would benefit seniors, people having a hard time finding a fmamily doctor and pensioners. This shows the ordinary Canadian (not the diehard Conservative or Liberal supporters that one sees in these forums) that the NDP is trying to help them.

Second, in any negotiation there has to be give and take. To get these issues to possibly become law, they have to accept the corporate tax cuts (as unsavory as they are). If not then we definately won't see the taxes cut off home heating oil. And to all those Liberals who say that Layton sacrificed his principles for this potential agreement with the Conservatives, it was the liberals up until very recently supported and often pushed corporate tax cuts. It seems to be they saw that the average Canadian was against corporate cuts so they became opportunistic (with a potential election around the corner) and changed their tune. And funny how these same Liberal supporters won't say anything about how the Liberals change of heart on the Afghanistan deployment.

And thirdly, if the Conservatives refuse to go along with the four issues, then the NDP can say they tried to be civil and come to an agreement. Compare this to the Liberals who childishly say it's either their way or the highway (I may end up saying the same about the Conservatives all depending on what happens.)

There's another way of looking at it. In terms of seat distribution, 88.4% are non-NDPers, 84.8% are non-BQers, 75% are non-Liberals and 54% are non-Conservatives. Meaning 46% are Conservatives, 25% are Liberals, 15.2% are BQ and 11.6% are NDP. One seat equals one vote. Just sayin'.

Are you kidding me? :lol: Yeah, you must be kidding... Layton's #1 concern is Layton... Let me correct that... Layton's ONLY concern is Layton...

Let's have a look at Layton's "demands" and what Layton wants to take credit for if any of these come about...

- Removing the federal sales tax from home heating bills and

[no brainer - a "populist" option that may become a part of ANY party's "platform", especially if an election is during the - non heating period - problem is it's highly unlikely to be implemented the following heating season or be in any "new" budget.]

- restoring the EcoEnergy Retrofit program;

[The LIBERALS implemented this program (I took full advantage of it). The CONS kept it going for 3 years before cancelling it even though it worked VERY well. The CONS may put a version of it back in because it'll get them votes. The LIBERALS are sure to make this a part of their election platform. Layton want's to take credit for it.!?!?]

- Increasing the Guaranteed Income Supplement for low-income seniors;

[Already in the works in one form or another by ALL parties. - No guarantees that action will result. Likely nothing will get implemented by the CONS post election. Another "nothing" demand from Layton to try and "look good".]

- Expanding the Canada Pension Plan; [same answer as previous since it's basically the same issue.]

- Hiring more family doctors.

[WOW! Really? What party ISN'T for this one? The CONS may "take it OUT" if they think it'll LOSE the NDPs support for their budget and trigger the election the CONS want. Nuff said.]

Which brings us right back to square one...

Now we'll see how badly Harper wants an election OR how badly Layton doesn't want one... :)
