I have to say I'm quite happy with the election results. Things turned out much better than I dared hope. The Dems took the House (making Nancy Pelosi Speaker- gotta love that), and most likely the Senate, too. Dems also swept my state. I'm loving the headlines this morning! It's good to see Americans are finally fed up with our government.

I'm Canadian but I really wanted to see Robert Bowman win. You need to fill the house with monetary reformists and people that will throw these e voting machines into a dump.

I'm glad and relieved Don Paul won.

Ultimately its red pill or blue pill until you get monetary reform and you won't get that unless you throw out e voting.

I'll bite, what kind of conspiracy is involved that connects the lack of monetary reform with voting machines? Just curious.

Congratulations to our American friends for stripping power from the rightwing ideologues in their midst.

It's a great day for democracy. Let the oversight begin.

Now...our turn!

Yeah, with Nancy Pelosi as Speaker you know the House will be free from nasty, shrieking ideology.

I predict two years of legislative gridlock, during which none of the liberal agenda gets implemented. Just so you know ahead of time. So don't blame poor Nancy.

Might have been some gridlock if only the Reps went Democrat but now NBC is saying that Virginia has gone Democrat as well.

It is Bush who will have to compromise. The Senate and the House are not about to do anything radical except govern without trying to have a 97.9% voting record with the President.

The Democrats definitely did well this year. You have to tip your hat to them. Although, it seemed to be more of a vote against Republicans then a vote for Democrats. They did better then I expected for a party offering absolutely no platform, other then not being George Bush. The good news is, that their gains will only be temporary. They gained many seats in very conservative districts due to Iraq, and several unusual circumstances like Abramoff and Foley. Not to mention the true voter fraud that took place this fall. Democrats pretending to be conservatives. That ain't gonna fly with a two-year voting record. :D

Also, I think it's probably a blessing in disguise. With an important Presidential election on the horizon, briefly reminding the voting public about just what Democrats leading Congress is like, will go a long way for 2008.

Crap!

I'm not really fond of Democrats. But I will have to say that having one house one way, and the other is better for America.

I thought you said Iraq wasn't an issue.

As far as the rest of your points, I guess you have to take your good news where you can.

Oh, I thought that was typically referred to as the "executive branch", while the others were called "Houses".

And I see you are holding nothing back on your stance for who you like....

Why should I? The Bush administration and his Republican enablers have been an umitigated disaster.

A large majority of Americans apparently agree with me.

Yeah. Now it's time to get down to truly important business, like enshrining Al Gore's apocalyptic ecological views into the Constitution, or something. But not in a fearmongering way.

 If you mean it's time to do something about Global Warming, you're absolutely right!

And their not Al Gore's views, btw. They are the views of the entire scientific community. But I guess they're all just idiots!

Were we watching the same election? A bare majority of seats in the House switched sides in the one that I watched. You'd think the change would have been larger if a large majority were involved.

I'm not a fan of the Dems, but the Republicans needed a break.

I don't like the fact that the Dems only stand for not being Republicans. What are their policies, their plans? They have none.

LOL, you're so right. Not only that, you're only one pay-cheque away from being homeless, America is a fascist theocracy, and there's gonna be a military draft. Gotta tackle those issues in a non-fearmongering way as well.

I love it, because you agree with the outcome of the election, "American's have proven democracy works". Unless of course, people you disagree with politically win elections. Then I guess it doesn't. Too funny. Anyways, newsflash. America practices a better form of democracy then we do. Always has.

Of course, democracy only works if one party is elected that fits your views. If you don't get your way then democracy is a complete sham. No offense to the left wingers on here [i'm Centre-left myself] but democracy has always worked in America for the most part. Canada is actaully less democratic then the United States. We don't elect our senators, usually 40% of the vote translates into 100% of the power, and the PMO has more control over affairs then even the White House.

Just because you have more things to vote for, maybe makes you more " democratic " in a superfluous sense, but it doesn't necessarily better the country. Take for instance voting for judges and police chiefs. More money poured into the hungry fire of elections, and what do you get in return? More corruption, more scandal, less trust, and a lot less time doing the freakin' job they were hired for.

Besides, compare what the PMO and White House have *done* with their power, and you find a difference so vast as to be staggering. PMO may have more control, in theory, but there has been almost no abuse compared to the US. The sponsorship scandal, even relatively speaking, was rice grain compared to the crap they've been pulling down there.

Very similar situation to the liberals here. If the dems want to win the next election they have to come up with clear policy, particularly on Iraq, so far it is strictly opposition but no solutions offered.

My understanding is that, we're it not for district gerrymandering, the sweep would have been even bigger. I'm talking a 1994 style blowout.

I don't like the fact that the Dems only stand for not being Republicans. What are their policies, their plans? They have none.

So? As the last six years have shown, you don't need plans or policies to run a country. Anyway, the Dems have plans: for example on Iraq, Jack Murtha put forward a plan for standing down in Iraq a while back and was pilloried for it. Other plans include launching some long overdue investigations into a number of administration actions, including Tricky Dick Cheney's oil company energy task force, raise the minimum wage, roll back a provision in the Republicans' Medicare prescription drug benefit that prohibits the Department of Health and Human Services from negotiating prices for drugs offered under the program, implement the recommendations of the bipartisan panel convened to shore up homeland security after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, and reinstate lapsed rules that say any tax cuts or spending increases have to be offset by spending cuts or tax increases to prevent the federal deficit from growing. It seemed that in the last two American elections there was so much fraud and because of this, democracy WAS at risk. I haven't heard anybody talk election fraud this time and perhaps that is because they knew the country would not sit down for it a third time. If the Republicans had won and there was no hint of fraud, that would also speak of a fair and balanced democracy at work. Yes, I admit it would not be my chosen desired outcome. But whatever is done fairly, honestly and by the people is democracy. There is overwhelming evidence that this was not the case in 2000 or 2004.

Posted

You could say the same of any election. American's did elect Republican's in 2000, 2002, and 2004. In the 04 election Bush won by around 3,000,000 votes. I think that's a pretty weak argument to say that since the Democrats never won more seats in 02 and 04 democracy wasn't working.

Can you present the overwhelming evidence from reliable sources. Not directed at you but their is a certain member who likes to gives tons of links to Youtube to back up their statements.
