M.Dancer Posted August 10, 2007 Report Posted August 10, 2007 I found this article alarming, especially since I have kids, a girl and a fair skinned red headed boy..... 84Percentage of the 785 sunscreens tested that were found to offer inadequate protection from the sun, while containing chemicals with "significant safety concerns." 1 in 2 Products on the market bearing claims that are considered "unacceptable" or misleading under Health Canada's sunscreen safety standards. Claims such as "all-day protection," "mild as water" and "blocks all harmful rays" are not true, yet are found on bottles. 95 Percentage of girls between the ages of 6 and 8 tested who were found to have oxybenzone, a hormone disrupter absorbed by the skin (found in more than 400 of the sunscreen products), show up in their urine. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/sto...eandHealth/home So every day when we go out the kids are slathered in a sunblock which has health issues according to this site. http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/special/s...t.php?show=best Makes me feel warm all over....... Will the government step in and enforce proper labeling? Quote RIGHT of SOME, LEFT of OTHERS If it is a choice between them and us, I choose us
xul Posted August 11, 2007 Report Posted August 11, 2007 Perhaps wearing a Arab aba is the best way to protect people from any ultraviolet radiation. Sometimes a stoneaged way works better than some modern way admired by civilized people. Government usually do less than which the public expect. They may set up a committee, usually are full of senators, lawyers, doctors and chemists, to deal with such things and make the public ease by being deeply convinced of those specialists who have enough ability to fix any problems for them. But the fact is, citing from a chemistry book authored by an American chemist I have read, "Paradoxically, although many of the environmental problems that beset mondern society are of a chemical origin, the methods of controlling and correcting those problems are also largely of a chemical nature." scribblet Posted August 11, 2007 Report Posted August 11, 2007 A long time ago I read that putting anything more than an 18 on your skin was not necessary as you were simply just putting more chemicals on your body. Quote Hey Ho - Ontario Liberals Have to Go - Fight Wynne - save our province
Drea Posted August 11, 2007 Report Posted August 11, 2007 I've always been suspicious of sunscreen and avoid it when possible (it is in most makeup and facial moisturizers...). The sun is good for us as long as one doesn't get burned to a crisp. I would rather take my chances with the sun than with chemicals. Quote ...jealous much? Booga Booga! Hee Hee Hee

Will the government step in and enforce proper labeling? I recall something like that being said on the news sometime ago. I do not enforce sunscreen on children....the parents are told to bring them, but if they don't I do not make a big fuss. I do tell them to wear their cap though to protect their eyes. What I do is get the children outdoors at around 7:30 am and they're back indoors at 10 am. It's been "old wives' tale" that the morning sun is very beneficial for everyone especially babies and children...and I tend to believe that. Edited August 11, 2007 by betsy Quote

daniel Posted August 12, 2007 Report Posted August 12, 2007 What would be more practical: 1) to have industry do proper labelling; 2) to fix the Ozone? Quote
betsy Posted August 12, 2007 Report Posted August 12, 2007 What would be more practical:1) to have industry do proper labelling; 2) to fix the Ozone? Moderation is the answer, imho. Followed by proper labelling. Fixing the ozone layer (if it's truly fixable and not a part of a regular natural cycle) will not happen overnight nor does it offer any guarantee. And I have no complete trust in chemicals that usually offer Protection" for some things but usually have side-effects or damages on other things. I'll apply sunscreen only when I'll be in the sun that long, depending the time of day. Quote
