Is Stephane Dion also a citizen of France

Does anyone know, with proof, if Stephane Dion is a dual citizen of both Canada and France?

This is important since Mr. Dion is now in the position and could be Canada's next PM.

This now raises the basic question concerning his LOYALITIES TO CANADA if he is indeed a dual citizen.

Would he be loyal to France and its ideologies, Quebec and its ideologies or Canada and its ideologies.

Now that would fuel your fantasy wouldn't it?

Stephane was born in Quebec City, went to Laval and recd a Doctorate in Sociology from a Paris University. Perhaps that is what has confused you.

The only report I have read so far is from an article from the Calgary Sun. Nothing yet that shows any proof.

Dion does, in fact have dual citizenship by virtue of the fact that his mother was born in Paris. That fact does not make criticism on that basis less stupid, however. I mean, just look who's leading the charge.

Question of loyalty

New Liberal leader Dion deserves citizenship scrutiny

By EZRA LEVANT

Stephane Dion is the new leader of the Liberal Party. And he is a citizen of France.

Imagine the shrieks from the media if the Conservatives were to elect a leader who is a dual citizen of the U.S. He would be called a U.S. poodle at best or a spy at worst. Every time he opined on a subject, it would be scrutinized through the lens of Canada-U.S. relations. Everything from military spending to foreign treaties like Kyoto would be looked at through the question: Was the Prime Minister of Canada truly pursuing Canadian interests, or was his loyalty to his other homeland at play?

Translation: "If the Conservatives elected a leader who was a dual citizen of the U.S., the liberal media would fall all over themselves to question his loyalty.

I shall now proceed to fall over myself to question the loyalty of the new Liberal leader on the basis of his dual citizenship."

You can't buy that kind of self-refutation, folks. The rest is Levantness as usual. I wish that guy would just discover girls already. Or boys. ;)

Oh and I thought this bit on the Alberta PC leadership race was funny, given the main thrust of his article:

If Stelmach truly is a uniter, he will give Morton a senior cabinet position and respect the policy aspirations of Morton's wing of the party. It is unthinkable that Dinning would now run as an MLA -- he clearly wanted the premier's job or nothing. Look for him to be appointed to a symbolic place in the party.

That's right: Levant, who went on for the previous 300 words about the dangers of dual citizenship, is pushing for an American citizen* to be given a senior post in the new provincial cabinet.

*Apparently Morton took on Canadian citizenship in 1991 (even though he first came to Canada during the Vietnam era, a war which he actively opposed...hmmmm....), but it's unclear whether or not he gave up his U.S. citizenship.

Do you think the RCMP should be called into investigate?

Jane Taber interviewed Dion today on MDuffy Live. Yes, he is a citizen of France...and no, he doesn't think it will matter, since according to him, Canada comes first.

Maybe Harper could make a law against dual citizenship. He's been for some time now. Why hasn't he?

The question of dual citizenship was briefly touched on the news regarding the Lebanese-Canadians who reside in Lebanon (and do not pay any taxes in Canada), and had to be rescued from Lebanon using Canadian taxpayers money. Some of the rescued Lebanese interviewed sounded like ingrates...which of course some Canadians resented, and I think fueled the dual citizenship issue. Don't know what became of it...just talk I guess.

It's all in Harper's hands now. If he wants to stop Dion, he should enact legislation this week. That way he gets rid of a Governor-General and leader of the Liberal party.

Ah yes, the Lebanon connection. And do you think it's a coincidence that Lebanon was once a colony of...duh duh DUN...France?

(If that shows up in Ezra's next screed, I'm gonna sue the little toad.)

No it doesn't.

How would you know.

You are one of the ones along with homosexuals and Quebec who continually belittles and attacks any type of authority that is the basic requirement of any democratic country.

Your little group wants and looks forward to a breakdown of loyalties and devotion to this country that forms Canadian nationalism, a stinking word to you and your anti American pals.

Hoping for the system to break down and succumb to your type of ideologies, socialist dictatorship, atheism, perversions and Quebec ideologies will never happen as the Conservatives and the majority of Canadians will prevail with a strong and united country and don't need the help of your kind.

It is December. Why haven't the Tories introduced a law on dual citizens? Is this another broke promise?

Why, was it made a promise during election time?

Your link never mentioned anything about a promise to change it....although it did say that they plan to re-visit the issue.

Not all promises come during an election. Some come in throne speeches, some come from the prime minister and the cabinet in the course of their term.

It's December now. Dual citizenship was an issue in the summer. I repeat, why haven't they "revisited" the issue now, especially since they Dion in power?

Mind you, they're still stuck with other pressing issues such as accountability, environment, and what else is there before the Senate

Then there's this SSM that will be brought up this week (which was an election promise, btw)...then there's the issue with RCMP Commisioner on the Arar case....so maybe they've got a lot on their plates right now.

Maybe they're still trying to figure out what to do in the backrooms. Maybe they don't see Dion's dual citizenship as a big deal...who knows...

Anyway, aren't you a Liberal supporter?

Aren't you a Conservative supporter? This is a revisited issue that seemed to resonate with you.

The Accountability Act is supposed to be back from the Senate in late January. That's about average for a bill.

Same Sex marriage gets decided this week. The timing solely rested with the Tories.

The RCMP Commissioner was supported by the Tories a few months ago. You think they were wrong?

Six months is a long time after an issue when people her are chomping to go to the polls again in spring. How hard is it to introduce a bill or resolution on the issue? Not very. The Bloq had their bill and the Conservatives had their counterbill all in less than a week.

So you are a Liberal supporter!

Well, what's all the rush then?

Your patience should've been honed well to perfection by now...after 13 long years!

I have no problems with dual citizens. My wife is one.

It would appear that Conservatives don't think of it as much of an issue either since it has been six months and most people think an election is in the spring. Many new pieces of legislation introduced from February on will probably die or the order desk.

Time is running out.

Who cares about what other countries he is a citizen of? People shouldn't have to renounce other citizenships because their loyalty might be in question in public life.

I disagree. His ONLY concern should be Canada if he's in a position to replace the PM. Bottom line.

He needs to revoke his French citizenship. Why have it?

Public office makes it a big difference.

If Canada ever gets into conflict with France....how can the public have full confidence in their PM, if he holds a citizenship of that country as well?

This "issue" has really brought out the stupid.

Leafless:

Such as?

Your little group wants and looks forward to a breakdown of loyalties and devotion to this country that forms Canadian nationalism, a stinking word to you and your anti American pals.

What does anti-Americanism have to do with Canadian nationalism?

Hoping for the system to break down and succumb to your type of ideologies, socialist dictatorship, atheism, perversions and Quebec ideologies will never happen as the Conservatives and the majority of Canadians will prevail with a strong and united country and don't need the help of your kind.

Yup , that's right, I want to destory the country and a guy who recieved French citizenship on the occasion of his birth is how we're going to do it. See, the plan is to cause heart failure or brain anyurisms among all the idiots who think the fact a prospective PM has -GASP!- two passports, is an actual issue.

Why have it? Because he was born with it?

What difference does it make?

Did Ted Morton renounce his U.S. citizenship?

How does one's legal status as a citizen pretain to one's personal loyalty?
