Well, Let me start that I stand 100% behind the freedom of finger. I remeber giving the finger once as the Mulroney motorcade stopped traffic to take him and Mila shoe shopping....and I once gave the finger to Bob Rae as his limo cut me off at Spadina and Harbord.........

......On the otherhand, there's a time and place for everything, and flipping the bird, as the yankees say, should not be done in front of children.

Giving the finger to the President infront of a bus full of kids is wrong no matter what party the President is from. I would have expected the same if it happened with Clinton.

Why is it wrong? Because it's the president? Or because it was in front of the kids?

They were junior high kids. They've seen and done worse.

Where do you see that?

Both.

It's wrong to use that gesture infront ogf kids and it's wrong to use that gesture towards the President in fron of kids. You should repect the office of President even if you don't respect the man.

You have an issue with that?

how the hell do you know what they have or haven't done.

It's not in the article, but come on: it's 2006. Chances are, a great many children will have seen a man having sex with a goat on the internet before they are 10. I don't think the "bird" is a big shocker.

To wit.

Both.

Yes. First: he's a democratically-elected (well...bear with me here) representative of th epeople, not a king. And while it may be inappropriate to flip him off, I don't see it as a crime worthy of dismissal.

Second: I don't recall much of that "respect the office" stuff going around when Clinton was being called a rapist and a murderer and when the papers and airwaves were filled with lurid speculation about the apperance of the Presidential Schlong. And, if I remember right, the same people engaging in such behaviour were from the same side of the fence as those who are overcome wih the vapours whenever someone wears an anti-Bush shirt or makes a imprudent gesture in his direction.

Finally, well, some things speak for themselves.

Well, I guess they're withing their right, they don't have the "freedom of jesture" enshrined in the Constitution yet, at least, as far as I know.

If it's you or them, the truth is equidistant

Generaly from what I encounter, kids are more potty mouthed than ever. And kids know more about obsenities, sex and other shit from the Internet indeed.

I'd give Bush the finger for sure. How can one respect the office of the president when he is a complete idiot? I don't think Bush respects much. So screw him :).

Fired for that? That seems way to extreme for the 'crime'.

As an adult in charge of those youths in her bus (just like a teacher in charge of her students in her class), she has a responsibility to set a good example.

Well said. Kids all waving at the President's motorcade, half of them probably don't even know who he is and the driver has to play snitty bitch. I'd say she has some stability issues to begin with.

Wondering though, who will replace her? Around here, drivers are hard to find - looney left or hard right.

From the article....

The bus driver was not terminated for making an obscene gesture at the president. The bus driver was terminated for making an obscene gesture in view of the students,” Ms. Niegowski said. “That's not the role modelling we need for our students.

Now they're holding up school-bus drivers as role models???

Laughable.

It would be one occupation that most would avoid more vehemently than they would a position as toilet-cleaner.

So as far as you know they could be in grades 1 or 2.....I don't thing rude gestures is on the syllabus at that age.....teaching them to despise those who would lord over them shouldn't be taught until they are ready to pay taxes....

First Amendment ring any bells? But you're right in that free speech rights don't protect you from being fired for something you said in the workplace that goes against company policy.
