Nobody said Americans were smart now did they? Now all y'all are suffering from buyers remorse. More importantly, the world suffers. I can't vote pax. You should have included a "sort of" choice.

Canada is both its own culture AND a "sister" of Americana. 

Most of Canada...geographicly speaking...has a respect and a sort of kinsmanship with Americans. Especially West of Quebec. A province that...lol...frankly the USA should not set any designs on. 

The cultures are inexorably intertwined by our historical relationship. But "Canadiana" is a thing. From Les Quebecois to the still remaining British Loyalists. Canada...as a matter of necessity...has had to learn to cooperate and make compromises in order to maintain social cohesion. We are...by nature of our national identity...less power hungry than our capitalist brothers south of us. We were not born of revolutionary war, but of cooperation and compromise. 

Our...diplomatic nature...is certainly not ideal in some cases. As exemplified by the utter flop of our last PM and, of course,  ol' "Elbows Up" carney. But that faux pas aside...

The proper answer is..."sort of".

I read lots. And then I decide if what I've read, makes sense. If it doesn't, I file it away under "G" for garbage.

For instance...I read that the carney was the only one available in the last federal election, who could deal with Trump. "Elbows Up". Knowing something of the carney's business relations with the Trump family, I was rather skeptical. As it turns out, my skepticism was well founded and that bit of silliness was filed under "G".

But I do acknowledge your TDS, and would extend my sympathies. I understand how it can be debilitating to rational thought processes.

As discussed, Canada’s sovereignty can’t be on the table, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a way to essentially allow Americans and Canadians to live and work in each other’s countries, respecting local laws and customs.  There would have to be a minimum residency length to draw public benefits, that kind of thing. So for a time foreign residents would pay into private insurance.

This is the kind of arrangement that Carney and Trump should seek.  Instead of trying to turn Canada into America, let Americans have the option of living as Canadians and vice versa.  I think it would be the best scenario for both countries, because each country is better at certain things, but in some cases you can’t enjoy certain Canadian benefits without giving up some American ones and the opposite is also true. The point of trade and unions is to maximize opportunities and options.

I think the citizens of each country envy the other country in certain ways.  America provides more economic opportunity but also greater danger.  I think some people are better suited to one way than the other, so country of origin shouldn’t prevent people from choosing the system that works best for them.  Over time the countries can adopt effective practices from each other and much duplication of departments and regulations can be reduced.  It means letting go of some protectionist trade policies in exchange for huge upside synergies.  Canada has the energy, resources, educated population, safety, and stable financial institutions.  The US has the larger market and economy of scale, as well as shorter winters. Why not give people on both sides of the border the ability to choose which side to live and work on for as long as they want?
