Rebellion rarely has to play when institutions perform their roles adequately and appropriately and the buses run more or less on time.

Things do seem however to be falling behind schedule, so to speak, more often.

 

It's hard to tell though. 

One of those things where people long for the good old days, but if you read through old newspapers they were saying the world was about to end. 

 

I'm not saying I agree or disagree. It just is. 

Maybe having young kids makes me optimistic, but I'm getting my money's worth from my institutions where I live. 

With some notable exceptions

I can't speak to your examples but I will trust that you are not mixing 'popular' with 'populist'

Trudeau Sr was "popular" for a flicker of the zeitgeist.  He met with Lennon & Ono.

He was never ever ever a "populist"
