Democrats lose and cave:

AP: What’s in the legislation to end the federal government shutdown

What’s in and out of the bipartisan deal drew sharp criticism and leaves few senators fully satisfied. The legislation provides funding to reopen the government, including for SNAP food aid and other programs, while also ensuring backpay for furloughed federal workers the Trump administration had left in doubt.

But notably lacking is any clear resolution to expiring health care subsidies that Democrats have been fighting for as millions of Americans stare down rising insurance premiums. That debate was pushed off for a vote next month, weeks before the subsidies are set to expire.

Don't you think that if I were wrong that I would know it?

So what the hell was the point for shutting the government down in the first place. We’re back to square one and still have to go through this again in Jan.

It was a very expensive hissy fit. They sure showed America what fighters they are though...at the American public's expense of course.

Right...the health care subsidies were supposed to expire according to existing legislation that sunset the benefits, legislation that Democrats helped to pass years ago.

I don't know why today's Dems chose to die on this hill, but thankfully a handful came to their senses and voted with the GOP to end the shutdown madness in the Senate.   In shutdowns past, a continuing resolution (CR) was expected much sooner after the political showmanship was done in the media.

Washington is broken, and was broken long before Trump showed up.

Looks like Schumer cooked his own goose. Dumb fck.

The Democrats are at war with themselves. They're having their T-Party moment. Its quite possible that the Democrat party is gonna come out of this full-on looney tunes.

Meh...at least it'll be entertaining.

Yes you’ll see the New Democratic Party come out as the new communist party of America. And don’t believe them when they say socialist either, they mean full on authoritarian communist. It’s in the Antifa’s playbook.

Possible. I think it's also possible that the Democrat party splits in two.

The provision inserted into the spending bill to compensate senators whose phone records were examined in the Jan 6 investigation has provoked anger on both sides in the House. It could mean millions for each of these guys. Talk about conflict of interest!

Conservative House Republicans slammed a multimillion-dollar giveaway to eight GOP senators tucked into legislation ending the government shutdown on Tuesday night, but said they had no choice but to move the bill forward.

During a meeting of the House Rules Committee to set up a vote Wednesday that could end the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, Democratic and Republican members of the panel repeatedly bashed the senator payday provision.

Needless to say, Democrats aren’t too impressed either.

Quote

“The Senate’s Republican Majority Leader, John Thune, just tucked one of the most blatantly corrupt provisions for political self-dealing and the plunder of public resources ever proposed in Congress into the GOP’s spending bill.

“If it were to pass, this astounding provision would give eight Republican Senators a personal payday of at least one million dollars each paid for directly by U.S. taxpayers. This jackpot is being set up at the same time Republicans throw millions of Americans off Medicaid and deny millions more a tax credit that helps make premiums for health insurance more affordable.”

There’s no need for politicians over the age of seventy. Schumer is way past it. The US is like a developing country in this regard. They seem to take the etymology of the word Senate to heart too much. It should not be a council of elders.

So...toss the habit of civilizations, for thousands of years, to have councils of elders. Good ideal.

Schumer's issue is not his age. Its his politics and his party.

Yes, toss it out. Schumer is too old. The US Senate is mainly boomers for crying out loud and six are eighty plus! What do they know about the struggles of young people? They should have enough decency and self-awareness to cede their positions to younger candidates instead of grimly hanging on. The American version is a very powerful political body. Old people have their place as advisors but not at the very apex of decision-making. Most advanced democracies get that these days. Politicians should be in the prime of life.

Even House Republicans are angry about eight senators voting to give themselves at least a million each.

Speaker Mike Johnson said he told Senate Majority Leader John Thune he strongly disagreed with the Senate GOP’s inclusion of a provision in the government funding package allowing senators to sue if their electronic records are obtained without their knowledge.

“I don’t think that was the smart thing to do,” Johnson told reporters Wednesday night.
