eyeball Posted September 22, 2024 Report Posted September 22, 2024 An oft-heard word in political campaigns and positioning these days is unleashing, as in the economy and especially resource industries. Usually we simply hear politicians talk about getting the government out of the way of these by reducing regulations and cutting red tape. We've heard it all before and it sounds benign and easy enough with lots of room for ambiguity. But unleashing sounds less so. Unleashing sounds less restraining and passive. Is it more effective to just get in the way of a pitbull or have a leash around its neck? Why do I suspect getting out of the way of the economy and especially resource industries will be more about removing all the protestors and activists that will be motivated to go do what many of these 'leashes' are for - to protect the environment our communities and workers from things like pollution and over-exploitation? Because you're a dishonest left-wing prat Who can only see things in terms of your tribalistic echo chamber. I should have thought that was obvious without explanation. Quote
Dougie93 Posted September 22, 2024 Report Posted September 22, 2024 resources are 20% of the Canadian economy, 10% of all jobs in Canada 60% of Canadian exports are resources, 80% of those exports going to the United States generating $20 billion a year in government revenues if you removed that from the Canadian economy it would incite a deflationary spiral comparable to the Great Depression mind you, since Environmentalism has become a de facto religion seizing control of governance in Canada I wouldn't rule out Canada cutting its own throat on the current trajectory America meanwhile would make out like bandits, as the value of the American resource sector skyrocketed this process has in fact already begun wherein Canadians were once practically on par with Americans in terms of income ; 90% in 1981 whereas now Canadians are only 60% as wealthy as Americans per capita Quote

herbie Posted September 23, 2024 Report Posted September 23, 2024 They had to come up with a new term since deregulation was almost always accompanied by disaster. "Unleash" companies to do their worst and we'll be better off. NOT Quote

Unleashing implies immediate - like within a month of being elected. It's just red meat for the impatient times we live in. It'll take years in any case and by which time everyone else will be leaving fossil fuels behind. A day late and a dollar short is so typically Canadian.
