NATO was formed in 1949. The Soviet Union dissolved in '91, forty years later. (I guess at least you weren't a century off?)

Canada pays NATO almost nothing. It chips in a bit to cover overhead, but the TOTAL bill for NATO operations comes to $3 billion a year, of which Canada pays about 7%. Leaving NATO could not save Canada billions of dollars. That would be quite impossible, as Canada only pays $300 million or so. Which is negligible. 

The way countries "contribute" to NATO is through their own defense spending. Canada's spending on Canada's own military readiness. And they'd need to spend a LOT more to achieve equivalent security without the defensive alliance. So being in NATO saves Canada billions of dollars. 

So, no, I'm not dumb. But you may be, and are certainly demonstrably ignorant. 

And to the final point, NATO has never started a war, nor seized land.  And it would be impossible for NATO to start a war. The alliance is a defensive alliance. Its conditions are only triggered if one of the members is attacked. A NATO member country could start a war, but the rest of the alliance would have no obligation to participate. And no, don't be an imbecile, nobody anywhere wants a war with Russia. Russia still has an extensive nuclear arsenal--and a pretty sad conventional military-- so an all-out war with Russia only ends one way. Nobody anywhere wants that. Canada pays NATO almost nothing. It chips in a bit to cover overhead, but the TOTAL bill for NATO operations comes to $3 billion a year, of which Canada pays about 7%. Leaving NATO could not save Canada billions of dollars. That would be quite impossible, as Canada only pays $300 million or so. Which is negligible. 

The way countries "contribute" to NATO is through their own defense spending. Canada's spending on Canada's own military readiness. And they'd need to spend a LOT more to achieve equivalent security without the defensive alliance. So being in NATO saves Canada billions of dollars.

And to the final point, NATO has never started a war, nor seized land.  And it would be impossible for NATO to start a war. The alliance is a defensive alliance. And no, don't be an imbecile, nobody anywhere wants a war with Russia. Russia still has an extensive nuclear arsenal--and a pretty sad conventional military-- so an all-out war with Russia only ends one way. Nobody anywhere wants that. It's not good for anyone's business, unless you think the global economy is driven by manufacturers of iodine pills.
