CdnFox Posted April 25, 2023 Report Posted April 25, 2023 https://nationalpost.com/opinion/13-billion-reasons-albertans-should-be-livid Rex Murphy: 13 billion reasons Albertans should be livid Massive subsidy for EV battery plant in Ontario another smack in the face for the oil and gas industry Thirteen billion dollars in government subsidies are going to Volkswagen to build an electric vehicle battery plant in Ontario. That’s what the Liberal government calls a “business case.” Thirteen billion dollars to build a $7-billion factory. Of course such a massive payout — bribe? — would only be provided for a “green” business case. Foreign governments caught in an energy squeeze — like say, Germany — turned to Canada to see if our great oil and gas reserves might fill the gap, but that was not a business case, according to our prime minister. At least not a business case for Canada. For Qatar maybe, but not Canada. Well that's an interesting take on it. Moonbox Posted April 25, 2023 Report Posted April 25, 2023 Rex Murphy conveniently forgets how many billions of federal subsidies and loan incentives the fossil fuel industry has received from the Canadian government, or how they bought the Trans Mountain pipeline for $4.5B or whatever it was. Well yes and no. First off with trans mountain they actually bought ownership. So there's an asset there. As to the fossil fuel industry in general that isn't for one lousy factory, that's for an industry that employs well over 200 thousand people and pours tonnes of money in royalties back to the provinces and creates many many billions in tax revenue for the feds. And it's not like ontario hasn't gotten more than it's share of such things over the years, the auto bail out, numerous air canada bail outs, etc. But fair point, it's not like alberta has never got a fed handout.
