Eh, I think you're focused on the wrong thing here. The real observation and question is why do so many spiteful a-holes also describe themselves as patriots? ETA: I'm just gonna skip ahead to the answer. It's because they see America as a place for straight, white men (and occasionally properly subservient women) and anything outside of that paradigm is unAmerican. They are the original embodiment identity politics and they are so goddamn fragile they need to lash out even at simple candy mascots if the roster includes more women or an anxious guy, or whatever.
