The notion of authority not limited by accountability and oversight is not compatible with common definition of democracy. When arbitrary measures are imposed population-wide, without critical examination and adequate, evidence based justification, without any recourse to oversight, and potentially, indefinitely (when something vague, and maybe) that cannot be a democracy in essence, other than in an empty name.

There are countries where mandatory indiscriminate measures were not allowed by law. The sky has not fallen. In other countries, the decisions could and were challenged in courts and were overturned. This situation is unique, and in the pursuit of safety under unconditional and unquestioned guidance of authority we may have stepped beyond the boundaries delineating modern democracy where all authority has to be accountable to citizens.

The developments over this pandemic period clearly demonstrated that under right circumstances, with right justification and stimulus, Canadian society will accept authoritarian rule. Be it catastrophic climate change, weather events such as widespread droughts or fires, out of control migration, a promise of relative and temporary safety, as defined by the authority, would trump, in the eyes of regular person, the rights to accountability and freedoms. And the rights cannot exist on paper only, they go away unless exercised.

The journey of citizen rights and democracy started not so long ago, about twenty centuries at most. Interesting that at the height of technological sophistication we're approaching the point where they no longer matter. Or already arrived?

Our PM just sent $61,000,000.00 to select media outlets "In order to ensure that they could provide adequate election information", and the list of media outlets that received the money is a secret.

In 2021, in a democracy, the government can just give tens of millions of dollars to a secret group of media outlets (right after he calls an election) and Canadians aren't allowed to know sweet f all about it.

This is in addition to a $695M budget increase for the CBC, which provides unshakeable loyalty and shining coverage of Trudeau 24/7, and which lets his scandals die with hardly any coverage. 

This is in addition to $600M which went to select media outlets, at the discretion of the head of UNIFOR, who declared that their union was part of the official resistance to the conservative party. 

This is a guy who's own government is also controlling what's allowed to be posted on social media. 

Trudeau just can't stop giving hundreds of millions of dollars to the media, and taxpayers get no say in it, nor do we even get to know which of his propagandist sycophant media outlets is getting funded or how much they're getting.

Won't change anything about authoritarian executive authority with no checks and balances, oversight and even the ability to investigate.

Western Canada already had their say but it didn't matter. Only 15 of 105 ridings in Western Canada went to the libs.

Trudeau bought and paid for the media and Eastern Canadians were too stupid to notice. It's embarrassing.

The worst part of it is that it isn't even just high school dropouts and 35 yr-old basement dwellers that are sucked in by this blatant propaganda from the sycophant media. University educated Canadians are some of the most brainwashed among us. 

 

Western Canada needs to separate and there's no other possibility left.

Do you know that every single one of Alberta's 34 ridings has over 100,000 people in it, aside from Parkland, which has 99,000? There's not a single riding in Nfld or the Maritimes with 95,000 people in it. 4 of them have 36,000 or less. Almost every riding in that welfare state/shithole part of Canada voted Liberal. 

I actually have a lot of friends from there, but I'm 100% willing to sever ties with anyone dumb enough to vote for la turd.

When executive branch has reign that is limited by practically nothing, even independent parliamentary inquiry is not possible because it wouldn't be allowed by the majority partisan club, what else would you expect? What else could be possible, logically? Near absolute authority that monitors and controls itself never existed in reality, its a myth and nonsense. Founders of US democracy new it very well 250 years back, with independent checks and balances. We never even bothered to notice.
