mirror Posted July 6, 2005 Report Posted July 6, 2005 Canadians used to gloat over how much better shape they were in than their American cousins. Well we will have no more of that. Apparently we have an adult obesity crisis in Canada and one out of four Canadians are seriously overweight. Like father, like son, children are have the same sort of problems. What are I/you/we going to do about it? I think I will try jogging a few times a week and see what happens as I have heard that is a good way to lose weight. Quote

Black Dog Posted July 7, 2005 Report Posted July 7, 2005 I have the perfect diet, it's called "Stop eating you fat pig". As far as advice goes, that's about as helpful as Ralph Klein shouting "Get a job you f**king bums" at the men in the homeless shelter. There's nothing wrong with promoting a healthy lifestyle. But there is something wrong with being a dick about it. I don't see how making fun of people for being fat is any more okay than mocking someone's financial status, disability or even race. I'm not one of those "it's okay to be fat" types, but I do believe in a little decorum. North American lifestyle is geared towards indolence, overindulgence and a general lack of of physical exercise. Things went down hill with the rise of the car culture after world war 2. Quote

I've been going to the gym as regularly as possible for the better part of a year now. I do an hour of cardio every visit, burning approx. 1100 calories. And He was talking about the Canadian population as a whole not pointing out you. I used to be skinny and active as a teenager, then the one job I got did not allow me much time to oppourtunity to get in shape. Being on the road all the time. I could have made better eating habit choices then but I did not. STOP eating out at fast food places like McDonals, Burger King, ect. This is the best thing you can do for yourself. And yes get off your ass and get out for some time. Get rid of your car as well. this makes people ultra lazy. Well it did in my case. I went from 150 and fit to 210 and lethargic in about 2 years. I was at that weight for about 7 years. I changed my job, eating habbits, routine and in about a year later I was down to 170lbs and getting back to shape. I am not where I was when I was a teenager, but really happy about my personal progress. It can be done. Now my job is help desk and I am a pc geek for the most part. But I do get off my ass and get out and about. Stop the fast food, turn off the tv,pc,console. Get some pals together, get outside and have some fun. Quote

The guvment SHOULD stay the hell out of my pantry. What they PROBABLY WILL do is treat obesity like smoking, and added layer after greasy layer of taxes to "luxury" food items. Fuckers. Then they'll figure some way to tax internet porn, for health reasons (shurely), and everything I love will be out of my reach. UPDATE: I just reread this post and spotted my double entendre. mirror Posted July 20, 2005 Author Report Posted July 20, 2005 Fat attack If you’ve strolled through a water park or walked along a sandy beach lately, you too may have been shocked by the number of young kids carrying spare tires, jelly rolls and junk in their trunks. We’re talking fat kids here and Jim Watson, Ontario’s new health promotion minister, has noticed as well and responded by declaring war on obesity. Basically, he plans to treat the obese like smokers – shame them into changing their ways. I think this guy is on the right tack here. Get serious people you need to lose some weight. It is better for your own personal longevity and puts less stress on our our overburdened health care system. Anyway it's summertime so time to get off the couch. NHL hockey will be here soon enough. Aside from the obvious-- public information campaigns (the Participation couple are probably looking for work...)-- what would people suggest? This is true to an extent, imo what is the governments roll is the following: 1. Ban trans fats, this stuff is posion as defined by the head of the AMA and the head of the Harvard med school who both agreed that trans fats do more damage to a persons body then many substances that we require warning labels for. 2. Provide HONEST evaluation of food, for instance diet pops; while it is true that diet pops don't have any calories the nature of several chemicals and the nature of any carbonated drink period is that they reduce the bodies ability to burn fat. 3. Subsidize healthy foods with a tax on poor food. One of the primary reasons that so many people are fat is that they eat fast food because of the cost, that sacrifice can easily be made up for in reduced health care costs. Quote

What does personal responsibilty have to do with social policy exactly? What exactly offended you about what I said? Do you think that companies should still be able to put arsneic in food? they used to you know. You have something against an informed population maybe? Perhaps its the idea of shifting the balance between the economic viability of healthy foods for less the cost that would be returned in savings on healthcare? Quote

Throw a little warfarin in there while you're at it. For those of us who appreciate freedom, personal responsibility is the preferred alternative to government interference. Why invoke public policy where it's not needed? I love how a socialist health care system naturally leads to greater and greater incursions into the private lives of the citizenry.
