If Canada's current immigration rate stays the same, our natural population growth would become negative by 2020. Increased global competition for high skilled workers requires Canada to address this issue so we can fill our labour market needs.

The share of the globe’s population that lives in the West has dropped from 33% in 1913 to 17% in 2013 and is projected to decline to 12% by 2050. These bare numbers, however, mask the age structures of the world’s population; today, approximately 90% of the world’s population aged 15 and under live in developing countries. Furthermore, because many developing countries are seeing their economies grow significantly and offer much more lucrative careers than even twenty years ago, they are themselves becoming magnets for international migrants, including their own expatriates who are returning in increasing numbers. There are, for example, an estimated 600,000 Canadian citizens now living in greater China. The international competition for talent will intensify as both developed and developing countries enter the race.

If Canada doesn't change our immigration policy with other countries we will be left behind in innovation and entrepreneurship.

Agreed....this has been an issue for decades. Slow Canadian innovation, lack of domestic capital, lower worker productivity, etc. created government sponsored programs to encourage foreign investment and the immigration of skilled workers. Worse yet, many frustrated Canadians emigrated from Canada to the U.S. and other nations (i.e. "brain drain").

The exodus continues today, largely driven by absurd Canadian real estate prices.

Except the majority of our immigrants are not 'high skilled'. They are families of people already here.

Actually, the U.S. has benefited from Chinese trade and investment in U.S. debt for decades, on a scale that dwarfs anything that is possible with Canada now or going forward.

Yeah? How? Make the case. Some rich guys might have benefited, but the united states and it's people haven't.

Foreign direct investment (FDI) levels have already made the case...globally. Canada is not an economic island that can just play patty-cake in North America and hope for the best. The Americans are about to bitch-slap Canada again on softwood lumber. Get in the game...or get left behind.

The U.S. and "it's people" have done quite well because of international trade and foreign investment. Other nations like China buy U.S. debt, the U.S. dollar is stable and remains the go-to reserve currency for the world. Markets are healthy (record highs), and manufactured goods are cheaper and in great supply for consumers.

Part of this new policy is to increase the number of international students and tourists. On average Chinese tourists spend 750 a day. Why would you have a problem with this?

You misread the paper, which itself is a push-piece for immigration. It does not say that. It says the following:

Statistics show that if the current immigration rate remains the same, the population growth in Canada will be constant; without immigration, natural population growth would become negative by 2020.

And no one is calling for zero immigration. Btw, the paper its talking about was based on immigration levels from 2011. Our immigration levels have gone up since then.

Do you really think China's foreign minister came over her to snarl at us and demand we increase the number of Chinese TOURISTS???

There is a reason why the statement was "workers, tourists and students". What China wants is more of its people working here.

Obviously they haven't gone up enough.

Yeah? China has been bitch slapping the US back and forth so long half your people don't even believe in your country any more and want to elect anyone, even Trump, even if he might burn everything to the ground.

You think the fact the Chinese buy your debt and the US dollar is stable makes life better for a guy in Pennvylvania who lost his job?

You are confused once again. The paper, from back in 2011, stated that if rates remained the same, then Canada's population growth would be constant.

Do you understand that? It's not a bad thing. And our immigration rate did not remain the same, it increased substantially. So our population growth will get faster. More people crowding into our cities. More forest and farmland paved over for housing tracts. Yaaaaay.

I don't understand your confusion. You posted a paper from 5 years ago which said that if immigration rates stay the same we're fine. And somehow you misread it as saying if immigration rates stay the same our population will decline. And you accuse me of drama for pointing out your mistake? How about you just admit you misread it and move on?

Trump makes his clothing in....China ! That guy in PA lost his job long before cheap Chinese steel came along....same as in Canada. Most Americans don't worry about what is happening with the Canadian economy as much as you worry about U.S.- China trade deals. The U.S. is not responsible for choices made by Canadians.

You have created yet another thread that displays your rants against immigrants. Who on earth do you want allowed into Canada? People like you will soon die off. Thank goodness.

We need more immigrants period.

Even your op is confusing. What are we debating? The policy itself? Liberals taking credit? Chinese investment?

I am in Canada for more than 10 years, and in China more than this, how many years you have been stay in China? Where is your knowledge came from? books? teachers? media? or other kind of brainwash material? Like people in the "Allegory of the Cave" ?

Yeah, pretty much. Books, Teachers, Falun Gong at Edmonton Farmer's Market, that sort of thing.

Do you have any reason for this belief?

Seriously? This has been debated to death. Nothing new here, just more rants against Asian immigrants. Edited by WestCoastRunner

This is silly. How is encouraging more people to come and destroy the environment equal to progress?

I don't think any sensible reasons that stand the most rudimentary scrutiny have ever been offered on this forum. It's always like "more immigrants are good for the economy!" and when anyone asks how/why the answer is just empty platitudes, never anything based on real numbers or data.

Substantially? http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/statistics/facts2014/permanent/02.asp

It went from 248,747 immigrants in 2011 to 260,404 in 2014 (the latest year with data on CIC's site).

Harper let in 280,687 in 2010.

Where's the substantial increase?
