Big Guy Posted June 3, 2016 Report Posted June 3, 2016 (edited) Traditionally, Olympic athletes compete often as individuals but under some kind of national flag. It appears that for Rio, the IOC has decided to allow a "refugee" team: http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2016/06/refugees-team-rio-olympics-160603132552404.html A 10 person refugee team is to compete at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro later this year as "a symbol of hope," the International Olympic Committee. "These refugees have no home, no team, no flag, no national anthem. We will offer them a home in the Olympic Village together with all the athletes of the world," IOC President Thomas Bach said on Friday following an executive board meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland. It may become a permanent team designation. To even the competition and give these folks a better chance to win, some new events should be introduced: The 500 mile walk while carrying a baby, the half mile swim while dragging 100 pounds of possessions, individual and team begging, the 3 mile bombing dodge, the digging out of rubble and burying time trials. Although there may be appeals, it may give them an advantage over teams from the West. GostHacked Posted June 3, 2016 Report Posted June 3, 2016 With all the economic issues in Brazil as of late I am not sure this is going to help them out financially. Quote
Shady Posted June 3, 2016 Report Posted June 3, 2016 Brazil, should've never been given the Olympics. But they probably bribed their way to victory. What a complete and utter disaster for the IOC. Canada should withdraw. Quote
-TSS- Posted June 4, 2016 Report Posted June 4, 2016 The world cup probably was profitable but Brazil being Brazil that money has gone into better pockets. With olympics it's the same story every time; an economic disaster for the host-country and the city. Only the 1996 Atlanta olympics came clean economically but those games are remembered as probably the most soulless sporting-event imaginable. Quote

-TSS- Posted June 4, 2016 Report Posted June 4, 2016 Perhaps you're right. I was thinking more of the summer olympics which have grown in size over the years. Quote

And Canada won hockey Olympic gold! Quote
-TSS- Posted June 12, 2016 Report Posted June 12, 2016 Athletics is the only interesting event at the summer-olympics. Quote
