WestCoastRunner Posted March 28, 2016 Report Posted March 28, 2016 Who met Obama at the airport.....befitting a visiting President? Especially so if this is such an important visit? No one! You think Fidel didn't have anything to do with the kind of reception Obama got? The two Castros really socked it to Obama! Oh for gods sake. Why don't you read the itinerary of his visit. betsy Posted March 28, 2016 Report Posted March 28, 2016 Do you even know what his itinerary involved? Or are you blindly focused on the airport? The airport arrival is very important! All visiting leaders (whether they're dictators or not), even the Pope....are met with the appropriate protocol! If not the President, a high-ranking minister is usually present to welcome the visitors. Quote

The kind of reception that he got, plus the letter from Castro..... Wait and see, shall we? After all, Obama is on his way out - and he probably did the Cuba thingy hoping it will be part of his legacy. But the snub will go down in history. Edited March 28, 2016 by betsy Quote

betsy Posted March 28, 2016 Report Posted March 28, 2016 (edited) Here's the attempt to save face: The White House says it's taking no offense that Cuban President Raul Castro didn't greet President Barack Obama upon arrival in Havana. Ben Rhodes, Obama's deputy national security adviser, says it was "never contemplated or discussed" that Castro would be at the airport. He said the Cubans consider Monday morning's ceremony with Obama and Castro to be the official welcome event. http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory/latest-us-move-airbnb-bookings-cuba-37790237 But look at this: Mr Castro, brother of Fidel, is due to welcome his American counterpart at the Palace of Revolution on Monday. But he was on the Tarmac to meet Pope Francis last year and Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill last month. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/centralamericaandthecaribbean/cuba/12199879/Donald-Trump-assues-Raul-Castro-of-snubbing-Barack-Obama-by-skipping-airport-welcome.html Edited March 28, 2016 by betsy Quote

kimmy Posted March 29, 2016 Report Posted March 29, 2016 IMHO, this is a good thing, like Nixon - in the short run - for ordinary people in Cuba and in America. Obama = Nixon. But Reagan was right in the long run: "Tear down this wall." Wouldn't the most "tear down this wall" thing to do be to restore relations and trade with Cuba? At this point, does the embargo serve any purpose? What's the point? If this is about promoting human rights, what makes Cuba worse than other countries like China? And China and Cuba are like angels compared to the Saudis, who are apparently key US allies. If it's about promoting change in Cuba, I believe the fastest way for the US to promote change in Cuba would be to throw open the gates and let US culture work its magic. We in Canada know better than anyone what a powerful influence it can be. I don't actually think it's about promoting human rights or democracy in Cuba. I think it's just about pandering to a segment of voters in Florida who still hold a grudge for stuff that happened 60 years ago. -k Quote (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Friendly forum facilitator! ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ)
GostHacked Posted March 29, 2016 Report Posted March 29, 2016 Kimmy, the US has better relations with Russia than it does with Cuba. Cuban missile crisis. Interesting no? 'Hey you ignored me for 80 years and I turn my nose up at you when you want to make up. Is that really a snub?' Quote
bush_cheney2004 Posted March 29, 2016 Report Posted March 29, 2016 Wouldn't the most "tear down this wall" thing to do be to restore relations and trade with Cuba? At this point, does the embargo serve any purpose? It serves the intended political purpose...on both sides. It is naive to think that the present Cuban government wants to embrace the idea of lifting the embargo (which is nearly meaningless in practical purposes anyway), because it would undermine their control of the nation. Takes two to tango.... Quote Economics trumps Virtue.

Takes two to tango.... It is equally naive to suggest the embargo is meaningless. Look at the extra costs involved. But hey I do have my concerns that this lifting of the embargo will screw the place up in lots of ways. Most of all because ignorant Americans will now flock there, litter the beaches, and drive the prices through the roof. Quote

Won't be any worse than the "ignorant" Canadians who have done the same for years. The Americans were living and investing in Cuba long before Canadians.
