The problem is climate change is seriously disrupting the abundance of salmon and of course fishery policies that another member knows about more than me.

I am deeply concerned about the salmon issues in bc.

Global warming has increased the production of lobster on the east coast, but also hurt the salmon stocks on the west. As one who enjoys eating both, I am torn. .....

Just kidding.

Many chefs in Vancouver love the land based salmon for its flavour and consistency and reliability. Who knows. Perhaps we are entering a new phase.

I think our economy is in great shape. Everybody gets what they need and almost everybody can afford what they want.

Canada, what a wonderful place to live!

You are forgetting the fishing industry, the logging industry etc. It's easy for you to shout from the rooftops because you don't live in coastal communities.

Better than pink maybe but farmed Atlantic salmon can't match wild Sockeye. I'd also pick wild Coho or Spring over farmed Atlantic. It's not just about humans, dozens, if not hundreds of wildlife species rely on wild salmon for survival.

Of course. My first and only choice is wild salmon. I am only pointing out the choices.

I'm way more concerned about what salmon issues are telling us about the bigger picture but I also think it's too late to get out of the mine.

Of course. That is what I mean. The Fraser river is vital to thousands of communities in BC and to the ocean population. And if we were to add more tankers, it would be devastating.

Not shouting from rooftops but stating happiness at being a Canadian and living in this country. Some segments of the country are having more success than others but in most cases it is cyclical. No work here, then go there. Or better, go to school to obtain more marketable skills. All kinds of government money available to learn new skills.

I have moved twice in my life based on job markets.

This rhetoric makes me gag.

A major spill might be devastating but aside from that, tankers are no worse for the environment than cruise ships.

That of course is another thread

You were the one who brought tankers into the discussion.[/quote

You of course understand the difference between cruise ships and oil tankers. If you want to discuss that, feel free. Although im pretty sure this isn't the right thread.

A tanker that doesn't leak fuel or crude is no different from any other ship that doesn't leak fuel.

If this topic is about the economic health of this country, whether we can and how we export our commodities is absolutely relevant.

And you want to compare the amount of oil transported? Go for it. Edited by WestCoastRunner

The amount of oil transported is irrelevant, only the amount spilled.

I'm not bailing but I'm running out of power. But it's highly relevant as to the amount being transported.

Really? How many tanker spills have we had in Burrard Inlet or Georgia Straight? The Americans have been shipping Alaskan crude into Puget Sound since the seventies and haven't had a spill. They feed the refineries just across the border where BC gets most of its fuel and other refined petroleum products.

I guess no one remembers the Exxon Valdez, huh?

If you want to engage in this we can. I can't contribute tonight.

Meh....Exxon Valdez isn't even Top Ten for oil spills....

And it's still not cleaned up....

That wasn't in Puget Sound and it was a single hull tanker operating in remote, constricted waters without a tug escort. It was also before GPS. There have been big changes to the ships, technology and procedures since then. The emphasis should be making sure they are adhered to. Every mode of transportation we have has continually been made safer over time.
