Blue blood

How do you reconcile the current low-tax but spend-anyway which has increased our current debt so badly if you believe in fiscal responsibility?

The tories delivered on balancing the budget as promised in the 2011 election. By drawing a line on spending it should keep taxes down over the long term.

As far as spending to deal with the financial crisis, it was the lesser of three evils.

I call it a dog whistle that harpers time is up.

Its not being a pathetic sucker, its hilding your nose and voting for the party that is most in line with your views. Who knows the next leader might be warm and fuzzy and the next one might not be

I vote cpc based on their fundamentals of low tax, low deficit, tougher on crime, and things like that, not because harper is the leader. I think thats what the editor is trying to get tory voters to think in that mindset.

This endorsement isn't aimed at those of you who have had your votes made up since day 1.

This endorsement is a plea to those undecided voters who might have still considered voting CPC based on the economic argument but have since decided against CPC because they've become disgusted with the CPC tactics.

He's pleading for those people to forget all the stuff about the campaign that they've become disgusted by and just focus on the economy.

"Guys! I get that you're angry about the fear-mongering, the demonizing of Muslims, the wedge politics, the outright fabrications, and so-on. But guys! Let's just focus on the economy! That other stuff is disappointing to me, too, but maybe Stephen Harper will resign after the election! Maybe a new leader will return the Conservatives to being a Big Tent party! And all that stuff you're angry about would go away! Let's just consider the possibility! It could happen! Please?"

Can you please provide a cite to the editorial that you're quoting?

Clearly, she's editorializing the editorial. Do you have anything that says she's wrong? If anything, I don't think she went far enough.

Unlimited economic growth has the marvelous quality of stilling discontent while preserving privilege, a fact that has not gone unnoticed among liberal economists.

I'm not quoting directly, I'm paraphrasing the contents of the Globe & Mail endorsement as well as his comments in his Q&A that I liked to earlier today.

If I see words in quotes like that I expect to see a source. Qualified statements only please. I only deal with facts.

I see your point. This election is essentially a referendum on harper and the tea leaves say his time is up. I think its good for the voters to be aware of the possibility that leaders can get turfed quite easily. The problem is with the cpc being branded as the harper party and not the conservative party.

I admit that I've provided an accurate summary of his argument. The link to the article is provided in the opening post of this thread. The relevant portion of the editorial is also quoted in the opening post of the thread:

It is not time for the Conservatives to go. But it is time for Mr. Harper to take his leave. He can look back on parts of his record with pride, but he has undone himself and his party with a narrowness of vision and a meanness of spirit on a host of issues, from voting rights to crime and punishment to respect for science to respect for the courts. The topper has been how this election campaign was sidetracked into an artificial, American-style, culture war over niqabs and “barbaric cultural practices.” The spectacle of a prime minister seemingly willing to say anything, or demonize anyone, in an attempt to get re-elected has demeaned our politics. And while it may have firmed up the old Reform base, it also solidified the Harper Conservative Party as a party of, by and for that base.

And I provided a link to his Q&A and his comments there a couple of pages back.

Anybody is free to make up their own mind as to whether my summary of his ridiculous position is fair and accurate. Which of course it is.

Have a nice day, and don't drink too much Kool-Aid!

Thats the plan of the left. Everywhere you look they call them Harper conservatives and have for years. They've done it on purpose.

And do you think the Kenney Party would be substantively different than the Harper Party?

Do you envision the Kenney Party becoming the broad-minded, Big Tent that Mr Walmsley hopes to see the CPC become post-Harper?

Perhaps you are not aware it was Harper himself who branded it the Harper government. You make your bed, you lie in it.

I'm not a politician therefore I have no bed to make politically. Your post makes no sense. Are you saying that I'm a Tory MP?

I'm saying your insinuation that it was the left who led the way to referring to the current government as the Harper government is wrong. It was Harper himself who directed the government letterhead be changed to same.

Presumably this question can be resolved. I always found it odd to refer to the Canadian government by somebody's name. It is not one person's property.

Vote for us. We'll find someone later!

I've seen governments on the cusp do some fairly bizarre things, but I think this is the first time I've seen a governing party campaign on the premise that if they get elected, they'll get another leader.
