One ticket has won Friday's Max lottery and it will be interesting to see who has it and I do hope its split among many people. So... if you held the ticket what would you do with the money?

Posted

I would set aside a small portion of it just to have fun with, to spend on any ridiculous thing I felt like. I think the first impulse would be to blow a bunch of money on stupid stuff, so I think it would be important to set a limit on the amount of money you're going to do that with, and when your stupid stuff account is empty, playtime is over.

I would use some of it to purchase rural land and build the woodlands home I've always dreamed of. I would set aside enough money in low-risk investments to live comfortably for the rest of my life.

I would use some portion of it for education-- possibly learn to weld, do CAD and 3d design, things that I've been interested in but have never had the time or money to get into. Guitar lessons. Buy a CNC machine and 3d printer. Learn to make neat things. Maybe start a small business making things.

I would gift some of it to my little brother.

I would make a significant donation to charities. I'm not sure which ones yet. Preserving wildlands, protecting wildlife, helping poor people and sick people are things that would be high on my list.

Money I had left over after doing all the above, I'd use for stock-market investment.

Oh shut up, you ass. I've never bought a lottery ticket in my life. I've never counted on winning the lottery to secure my future.

Topaz asked "what if?" It's fun to dream. Have you never once imagined "what if?"

Yes, that is a great plan. So what if people choose to buy lottery tickets that bring millions into the government coffers. I have noticed that you despise free will and would much rather have that money taken with just straight taxes.

Seriously, you really need to smoke a joint and relax. Somebody brought up a funny little thread and you go all nuts. Just chill or if you can't than I suggest you go out and picket a casino or something so you feel useful

I would give it all away to charity to make this a better place for all. It would not matter their religion, color, culture or political philosophy just as long as they really needed the money.

Honestly, God, Buddha, Mohammed or anybody else I missed - let me win and I will show you.

Honest I will, I really will, I really, really will. Trust me. I really, really will.

Picket a casino? Another waste of time!

If someone was paying money for stupid useless ideas, you just hit the jackpot!

This is a debate site. Don't like it? Boo hoo hoo. Cry everyone a river!

What does free will have to do with this anyways? If anything, lotteries can be an gambling addiction for very many people! The government or any groups/hospitals/organizations should not be pushing this on people!

In some counties, including Canada, people can go to jail for illegal gambling!

I'd make sure to spend it all in one year.

I would sell everything I have except for the iPhone, iPad and camera and travel.

Probably try to live in Vietnam for a while.

Then Crete.

Then wherever I fancy.

Half would be given to family and friends of course.

The other half would be invested in a combination of passive ETFs ( probably mostly in the vanguard world index fund, some in XRE, some in XPF, and some in a straight up cash).

I would budget to only spend no more than 2% of the principal each year for the first 10 years (which would still be a lot of money).

But this would never happen since I never buy lotto tickets.

Lottery tickets are a tax on the stupid (unfortunately, many people in my family are in this category).

The expected value of earnings of a lottery ticket is smaller than the cost of a lottery ticket. If you are risk neutral or risk adverse, it makes no sense to buy one. Why buy one?

If I did have such a ticket, I would put the money in a bank and dress up in a panda suit when obtaining the money like people do in China in order to prevent people from knowing I have 55 million dollars (http://www.odditycentral.com/news/chinese-lottery-winners-collect-prizes-dressed-as-cartoon-characters-to-protect-their-identity.html). I would then spend my time learning more about the stock market, to maximize the return to my investments, and spend the next couple of years doing calculations and looking through empirical data to determine the best use of that money.

Edit: at some point, I would probably spend money renting a super computer to perform calculations (buying a super computer would be too expensive).

Yes,yes, freewill and all. We know you despise it.

Me. I would take a long vacation. Likely drive around the Southern states. Figure out where I want to move too.

Doubt I would stay in Ontario. I do like B.C.

The Emperor idea sounds sweet

Yes we know lotto tickets are a self inflicted tax.

That's not the point of the thread but some people just gotta poop in other peoples threads.

Once again: we know already.

You've already GOT $55 million bucks! Why would you trade away any large portion of your life in trying to make more?

You can't buy more years of life. So use the money to enjoy every one you've got left. Buy your own little Playboy paradise house with waterfalls and storks in wherever you have the most friends and family and invite them over every day.

He wouldn't buy a Playboy paradise; he's asexual. The waterfalls and storks sound nice, though.

Ok, why don't you go get yourself a nice big cup of 7-Up.

10+ acres and I would build my own small house on the property. Nothing fancy, just something simple but smart. After that, pay off debt of some of my family. And maybe give some away.

I can't believe someone winning this kind of money and not giving back to charities. Personally, my spouse and I have decided to pay off bills, give some to our kids, and split the rest down the middle between us because each of us have difference charities and different financial plans, where it could do the most good within our community, which has high unemployment.

I don't put much into ordinal number systems.

You have $30 million after giving $25 away to friends and family and charity.

You are earning $1 million per year in a diversified portfolio (likely will average 1.5 per year but let's be conservative).

Why not live in a bunch of foreign countries and what does it matter which one is "first?"

But to answer your question anyway:

1) the people are awesome. All this BS about how nice Canadians are etc is just drinking our own kool aid. Although the Laotians win this category over even the Vietnamese.

2) the food is awesomer.

3) the country is beautiful with lots to see and do and learn.

4) it's close to Laos and Thailand which are the "same same but different" in awesomeness as Vietnam.

5) Close to Myanmar, Cambodia, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Taipei, Hong Kong, Mongolia ...so a good springboard into a part of the world that is different and hence not boring like most of Europe.

6) it's safe. Cities are modern enough to allow one to keep in touch with "home," allowing one to do banking without any issues.

7) yet the countryside is rural enough to step away from it all at any moment. Hoi An, Da Nang and Hue would be where I would stay first. Wonderful spa in Hoi An overlooking rice paddies where I would just sit transfixed after a massage ( sans happy ending).

So a combination of my experience and comfort with the country to see that part of the world before moving on to the Mediterranean (Greece and Turkey).

But who knows?

Maybe after seeing Ecuador this December I will change my mind and will decide to move to South America when I win the lotto next year.
