bush_cheney2004
Uh-oh...looks like the Canadian dollar is putting the squeeze on snowbird finances and purchasing power in the sunny and warm USA. This story is even more remarkable because of the reader comments that pit Canadians against each other for daring to winter in the Evil Empire. What do you think about Canadian snowbirds who are now so hard done by because of the loonie's decline against the U.S. dollar ? ...With the Canadian dollar now well below par against its U.S. counterpart, many snowbirds are finding it increasingly hard on their finances. "It bites every time you transfer money out of your Canadian to US," says Joe Schipper of Alberta. "Five thousand dollars doesn't go very far." http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/falling-loonie-has-some-canadian-snowbirds-selling-their-u-s-homes-1.3031088 Quote Economics trumps Virtue. Boges
Snowbirding isn't anything new. People were still doing it when the Loonie was 62¢. The cost of living is ridiculously low in parts of Florida. Sure the value of the Loonie will make it harder, but so does any number of other variable costs in the course of one's daily life. Wilber
We spend 3 months in So Cal during the winter. It won't be changing our plans other than doing less shopping. We take an RV down, We thought about buying something when CAD was high and US real estate was low but decided against it. Too many variables and uncertainties, it ties you to a particular location and is not something you can just walk away from. Quote "Never trust a man who has not a single redeeming vice". bush_cheney2004
I believe they also tax foreign owners at a higher rate too, don't they? Several states have property tax relief for homesteaded owners, so even U.S. citizens that do not live in the home pay a higher tax rate. Quote Economics trumps Virtue. Bryan
Plenty of places south of Florida with a lower cost of living.
On Guard for Thee
The really good news is that Americans are flocking across the border to spend those big yankee bucks. To boot they get cleaner air and much less likelihood of being shot.

I don't have a problem with that but I don't want to be a part of it either. Quote "Never trust a man who has not a single redeeming vice". Uh-oh....the CBC bit on this story...just like you. Traitor snowbirds coming home to use "our free healthcare" and cross border shoppers not supporting the Canadian economy. Next they will want to watch U.S. Netflix !! Edited April 18, 2015 by bush_cheney2004 Quote Economics trumps Virtue.

Did you think Snowbirds only showed up post-08? Old people and cold weather don't mix no matter the price point. You got that right. My parents were snowbirds all through the 80's and part of the nineties. Since we have been doing it, my father has often said how much he misses it. Mom died in 2010. My Dad just passed away on Wednesday, two weeks short of his 98th birthday. It has been a rough week. Edited April 19, 2015 by Wilber Quote "Never trust a man who has not a single redeeming vice". bush_cheney2004
Has nothing to do with "post-08"...over 500,000 Canadians own property in Florida alone...going back many decades. Quote Economics trumps Virtue.
SpankyMcFarland
Rentals in Florida seem quite expensive compared to buying, not that I am going to buy. Why is that?
