I'm not saying he is wrong but his link says nothing about the U2.

In the House Armed Services Committee's markup of the FY 2015 budget, language was included prohibiting the use of funds to retire or store the U-2; it also requested a report outlining the transition capabilities from the U-2 to the RQ-4 Block 30 in light of capability gap concerns.

Your sky commuter will most likely never come in your life time. Autonomous driving might, not sure exactly how old you are. We have self-driving cars with thousand of hours logged, it's just a matter of making them affordable for the average family, that is what will take the most times as auto corporations tend to drag their heels on these sorts of things.

Self driving cars, that don't drive in rain or snow.........

Sure, but if the USAF finds the required bandwidth to operate large fleets of UAVs as one of most limiting factors in their widespread use, implementing self driving cars is fantasy......

Self driving cars, that don't drive in rain or snow.........

I've no doubt they could be programmed to work a damned sight better to drive in rain and snow than most drivers who hardly ever see snow and you can bet they won't tailgate each other at120 kph in pissing rain like so many around here.

The fate of the U-2 is, again, up in the air. The Global Hawk Block 30 got retired. But it had congressional friends. Then the U-2 was retired in the 2015 budget. Now its “retirement” is on hold til 2019!

Actually they have driven in the rain. Not the snow, not YET. But give it time, within the next 10 years minimum cars will be autonomously driving in all weather conditions.

Maybe, and unaffordable for the public, nor in widespread use.

That may be an issue but it has nothing to do with their relative capabilities. Bandwidth will not be an issue with self driving cars and they may well be able to communicate with each other to avoid collisions. Aircraft TCAS systems have done that for some time.

How many TCAS have to control the aircraft well going through a red light or contending with a mattress on the hwy?

TCAS works to avoid collisions but doesnt do much for the A to B information. That will have to come from GPS I assume.

And some that embrace technology and make a living from the progression of technology also understand its limitations......

And some of those people are putting a ton of effort and money into over coming those perceived "limitations", that's how we move ahead. Never thought you were such a Luddite.

Self driving cars won't run red lights. That's the point. Perhaps you should look into the Audi system and see what they are using for sensors.

And there is a cell phone in every one of them, half of them probably being used at the time.

Self driving cars won't run red lights because they will be programmed not to. But say they won't be able to communicate, is that any worse than human drivers?

And yet your cellphone doesn't have a requirement to transmit and receive a fraction of the required data to allow a car to talk to intersections and other cars on the road with you.......Have you ever had a dropped call? Imagine your car dropping a call from the oncoming red light and an automated garbage truck is going through the intersection?

Traffic lights, stop signs, yields etc will all have to be in constant contact with not only your car, but every other car on the road........Ford, Tesla, BMW etc can't program your car to predict traffic light changes.

Are you even being serious right now? Of course they will be in constant contact with everything around them at all times. That's the dumbest thing I've heard all day. Just like autonomous warehouse bots are in constant contact with each other to avoids collisions. It's literally just sending a signal to all cars within the area, if you don't think that technology will exist and exceed our expectation within the next 10 years you don't understand technology.
