A man suspected of travelling from Nova Scotia with potentially hazardous chemicals and arrested at an Ottawa hotel today has been identified by the RCMP as a former military biochemical weapons specialist from the United States.

If this guy was a Muslim you'd bet we'd see 'terrorism' all over the news.

Police had evacuated the Chimo Hotel at 1199 Joseph Cyr St. on Tuesday night and closed off the surrounding roads as a precaution after they received word at about 10:15 p.m. ET of the potential threat of a man they believe had checked into the hotel.

They said the man was arrested without incident outside his sixth-floor hotel room.

The police hazardous materials team, and the chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive team, were also at the scene.

RCMP sources earlier told CBC an investigation was linked to the evacuation of two Nova Scotia neighbourhoods, after a suspicious package containing hazardous chemicals was found in the garage in a Cole Harbour, N.S., home.

Ottawa police said they are holding the suspect on a Canada-wide warrant issued relating to charges in Nova Scotia.

What was this guy up to?

How do we know he is not a Muslim? ;)

Scary part is that some reports indicate that he is suffering from PTSD ands some chemicals are missing. Mind you - that is immediate news and we all know the accuracy of that kind of reporting.

Note - For those expecting a response from Big Guy: I generally do not read or respond to posts longer then 300 words nor to parsed comments.

Yeah the RCMP had been following him for some time based on the incidents back in N.S. I'd like to know what his intentions were with those chemicals.

If his motivation was to target civilians because of his religion that's part of a worrying trend in self-radicalization. So yeah it would be a bigger deal.

Regardless law-enforcement did it's job. Sounds like this guy was very mentally ill.

I agree, law enforcement did their job. But even if it was a mentally ill Muslim, the rhetoric would be quite different. So how messed up is this guy and how much of a threat is he?

Yes because there is a trend of people committing violent crime in the name of Islam across the globe. Because this guy isn't a Muslims doesn't make that trend any less real.

Black teens are killed all the time, but when a White Cop does it, that's when it becomes national news.

I'll be more worried if his motivation proves to be ideological or patriotic like Anders Breivik or Timothy McVeigh. I think we're approaching a point where the with us or against us mentality our society has been steeped in could metastasize into something a lot uglier than it already is.

I said now watch what you say they'll be calling you a radical,
a liberal, oh fanatical criminal

But it shows not all terrorism is Muslim related. And they are not even classifying this as terrorism. This should be a really big story, just as big as the shootings on Parliament Hill. This guy is a former biological weapons expert. That needs to be taken more seriously.

Sure they guy might be mentally ill, but with his knowledge, that makes him more dangerous.

Well it isn't terrorism cuz he didn't do anything.

And I'm not saying all terrorism is Muslim related. What dude did in Moncton last summer was most certainly terrorism. Anti-Cop Right-Wingers are as crazy as Muslims that are getting their marching orders for ISIS.

Those two Muslims that were arrested recently had not done anything either. It was the potential threat they possessed, apparently.

Planning to commit terrorism is a serious crime. See the Toronto 18 or the Shoe Bomber or the Underwear Bomber or the Dude that tried to blow up a car in Downtown New York on Christmas Day.

See a lot of Muslims trying to do bleep.

How many chemists have been suspected of trying to do bad stuff like whatever people thought he was doing?

The anthrax scares after 9/11 directed at certain US officials was found to have originated from a research laboratory in the US. Potentially we could have a few. And with that knowledge again, concerns me more.

Other than that, I am not sure how many chemists/biologists are involved in terrorism.

He was divorced in 2006, 2008, was hospitalized for psychiatric treatment and same year moved to Halifax. Perhaps, the law should think twice before allowing people with mental health issues into the country.

Especially if they aren't from a minority group right?

They are saying he was a threat to the public, but the article stops short of calling this terrorism.

Christopher Phillips threatened to hurt police and posed a threat to the public by carrying two dangerous chemicals, police allege in court documents filed today.

HALIFAX -- Investigators in Halifax have found a variety of containers stacked floor to ceiling inside a cottage that contain "unstable" chemicals, the RCMP said Friday.

Chief Supt. Roland Wells of the Halifax RCMP provided an update on their investigation into the discovery of chemicals at two residences that have led to the arrest of a 42-year-old man.

"Within the cottage is a variety of containers filled with chemicals stacked from floor to ceiling. Many of these chemicals are unstable, so we must use extreme caution and care," Wells told a news conference.

Wow.
