My high school teacher with Harper...

At what point do parents take some responsability for the kids they raise?

At the end of the day it is the teachers job to teach skills that will leave them with the ability to make thier own decisions about what kind of person they want to be.

Parents are ultimately responsible for the children, probably 90% of what goes into a child comes from the home, but there's that 10% that can make a difference.

Why don't you want teachers to stick to teaching the three "R's"?

It's very concerning that you claim to be a teacher and all you can promote is teaching kids your socialist/marxist agenda. If I found out my kids teacher was promoting marxism, he'd be eating through a staw for a couple months.

Why we should never return to the three Rs.

I think maybe you should have attended a local WE DAY to see what kids really care about.

Knowledge is so overrated now. Life is not trivial pursuit. Real life consists of collaboration and creativity. Not regurgitating facts that anyone can bring up with a smartphone.

On the question of prizing knowledge over skills, one only has to consider the information processing power of the humble smart phone sitting in our pockets or bags, which contains the capacity to access more information than we could ever hope to store in our memory by rote learning, to see the pointlessness in such a cause.

Parents do not have a choice, they have to send their kids to school. Most parents expect the schools to teach the three R's and governments attempt to satisfy that expectation through control of curriculum .

If you feel that the role of the school is not the three R's then I suggest you start your own school, see if you can get accreditation and then those parents who want their kids formed into your vision of society can send their kids to your school.

Me, I'm not interested thank you.

So, all I need is a smartphone, how interesting. Currently I operate a large milling machine at work. This demands a thorough understanding of both mechanical and mathematical principles. Could you explain to me how a smartphone could simplify this job so that just anyone could do it? Currently, out of nine hundred plus employee's only twelve of us can run this equipment. I'm sure management would love to know how smartphones would make any of their employee's proficient with this equipment.

Or is it your contention that nobody has to be able to make or fix anything any more? What I find especially interesting is your constant reference to phones as the ultimate solution and replacement for actual knowledge, skills and abilities. You do realize that these would not even exist if it were not for people being highly proficient in the fields of Electrical Engineering and Mathematics, do you not? So in short, you propose that these forms of knowledge are all but useless, yet that which you champion as the answer is the direct result of these disciplines that you scorn.

All I can say is wow! And you claim to be a Teacher, they've really lowered the bar if that is the case.

I guess you are clueless to 21st century learning promoting 21st century skills( communication, creativity, collaboration, critical thinking)

The 3 Rs are 20th century skills. Your lack of knowledge on what is important in public schools these days amuses me.

In British Columbia the teachers bravely faced down the government in a labour dispute.

All the extra money they earned is going to pay for monthly charges for smartphones for their students, the many who cannot afford the phone or the monthly fee. Brave, noble teachers, I salute you!

So because you operate a milling machine, it somehow makes you an expert on 21st Century Learning? Pffft..

The teachers in BC fought for the kids when no one else would. Now teachers are having a hard time making up the time lost in classes. But you know who will get blamed? That's right. The teachers.

What? You love the children but you won't pay $70 month for an Iphone bill for a needy child?

People who are able to do something well can do that thing for a living, while people who are not able to do anything that well make a living by teaching. (Used to disparage teachers. From George Bernard Shaw.

I only jest. I have nothing but respect for teachers and the profession. Never heard one state "Knowledge is overrated" I admit.

I do not agree with the teachers unions political stance and l was offended when the cry "It's for the children" goes silent when a pay raise is accepted.

I had a drama teacher go nuts when a fellow student said she wished that the strike threat would go away. First hand account of politics in the classroom.

Teaching styles change. I do agree that kids should be taught how to think but not what to think. They should be given the tools to succeed and to show the world what they can do.

Reading, writing and arithmetic are the beginning. Technology has become a must and history should be taught so we do not repeat it. (Told to me by a teacher that believed knowledge was the greatest gift).

The good teachers teach students to question. To argue and to see the other point of view.

The corporations and unions may hate free will but it is my freewill that sends donations to my daughters school. Teachers buying supplies for the classroom sicken me so myself and other parents have helped when we could.Maybe if more money saw the classrooms ans less of it to administrators and collected sick days we would see an improvement.

Corporate taxes need to be raised and that money needs to be earmarked for public education. Private schools should not receive ANY funds from taxes.

To socialist - I spent a large part of my life keeping an eye on people like you. You get access to a classroom and you figure now you have all the answers. Because you have a captive audience and the reputation of numerous good teachers who preceded you now play psychologist and Minister of Education. Fortunately, I was able to get a lot of your kind transferred and or gave you a timetable that encouraged you to go into the public sector. If you really are paid to teach then I hope your principal and/or department head read your contributions on this board. I hope you share them on your facebook page where your fellow teachers can read them.

BTW - When I started in the classroom and continued through the system I certainly did not have the time to waste on anonymous opinion boards. Looks to me like you could spend a little more time studying the curriculum, satisfying the mandate of the school system and preparing for your classes.

To all other posters - This individual may represent him her self as a teacher but remember the guy who dressed like a soldier at the Ottawa Remembrance Day ceremonies.

So your a former teacher. Well, things have change considerably. It's not your fault that you are no up to date with 21st Century Learning. I understand that, and that is no fault of your own. Maybe you should go to your local school and inquire about 21st Century Skills. Ask if spelling tests matter any more. Ask if long multiplication and division are necessary anymore. There is a bi push in schools for SEL (Social Emotional Learning) Learners don't grow socially or emotionally if they are asked to compete in tests. Project based learning where groups of learners collaborate on projects has been proven by research to increase learning. You probably haven't heard of project based learning, or social emotional learning.

Here are some thins you may not be up to speed with.

Yes yes but as a person with children in the public school system I can tell you there is a huge backlash from teachers and parents with this new kind of learning. Math scores for example are dropping because kids can tell you why 3x3 = 9 but they can't tell you what 3x3 is. New teachers and more experienced educators are now coming to the conclusion that there is something seriously wrong with the teaching curriculum in Ontario public schools. I speak to the teachers and principal pretty often (my job allows me to donate to the school) and they all agree that the system is lacking in the basic aspects. The real world demands answers and skills. Nobody cares why the answer is correct. The point is to give the right answer.

Corporate taxes need to be raised and that money needs to be earmarked for public education. Private schools should not receive ANY funds from taxes.

Corporations pay taxes. They also pay legal fees dealing the ministry of labour for an obscene amount of make work projects, In Ontario they pay the hydro fee's that have left many wanting, training for things that are just common sense. equipment that will never be used and training for said equipment. Before I reached my present position I would have agreed with you but now I see everyday money wasted to cater to bureaucrats and their whims.

I am not talking about safety. Safety is a much needed practice in any work place and I take it very seriously.

Many corporations are looking toward Mexico and China. If they leave what will you loot next?

What taxes will be gained when more are unemployed?
