Boges
Instead of starting a new thread every time someone who's taking home a government pay cheque proposes a law that's meant to protect us for our own good, I'll just post it here. http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2014/08/13/board_of_health_urges_ban_on_serving_energy_drinks_and_alcohol_on_city_property.html Toronto Public Health is recommending that energy drinks not be sold along with alcohol at events on city property due to concerns about the harmful effects of mixing booze and caffeine. The city agency’s report, to be presented at the Toronto Board of Health’s Aug. 18 meeting, proposes to ban the sale of caffeinated energy beverages such as Red Bull, Monster and Rockstar to use in mixed drinks at events where organizers apply for a liquor permit, from wedding receptions to large-scale gatherings like Ribfest. Monica Campbell, TPH director of healthy public policy, worked on updating the policy. She says it’s intended to prevent a phenomenon called “wide-awake drunk,” which can happen when people mix caffeine and alcohol. What's next, banning the White Russian? Rum and Coke? Bailey's? People do this because it bleeps them up faster and for less. That's the goal! The whole idea of a night of drinking is something that would probably make these hall monitors quake. The ban on caffeinated alcoholic beverages in the United States was a result of multiple cases of alcohol poisoning and alcohol related blackouts. The majority of these alcohol poisoning cases were found on college campuses throughout the United States. Caffeinated alcoholic drinks such as Four Loko, Joose, and Tilt were the most popular around the U.S. The beverages, which combine malt liquor or other grain alcohol with caffeine and juices at alcohol concentrations up to about 12 percent, have become popular among younger generations. Their consumption has been associated with increased risk of serious injury, drunken driving, sexual assault and other behavior.
Boges
nice try... when does your false/fake libetarian targeted "nanny state" bridge legitimate concern... and if not the "nanny", then who? Four Loko is/was a specific energy drink that was sold no mixing required. In Nanny State Ontario there are many Energy Drink/Alcohol mixtures available. Four Loko seemed to up the ante. The idea of selling energy drinks at the same place alcohol can be sold is different though.

Mighty AC
Wait, does this mean I can no longer get a coffee with bailey's in it? Or are canned energy drinks somehow special? That's a good point. Coffee often has as much or more caffeine than energy drinks yet it is the socially acceptable option. Coming into the office and drinking 2 or 3 Red Bulls seems abnormal but coffee drinkers do it every day. Boges
....and one can buy it already mixed at the LC . I made note of that earlier. Look at the LCBO website that pretends to be classy by describing the taste of the drinks they offer. It's meant for classy scotches or wines, but when they do it for party drink, it's hilarious. http://www.lcbo.com/lcbo/product/rev/542977#.U-vJRUKWTHg Clear blue colour; aromas of candy-floss; sweet with citrus, blueberry and wine gum tones. Could you drink the same alcohol content Irish Coffees in the same time as vodka/redbulls? The answer is prob not. Thats why a splash in coffee is not prohibited. I've seen the affect of "rave" drinks.......not pretty. I'm not a gov't social control fan, but somethings don't socially mix and need oversight. My point was just about coffee being an acceptable drug, while often less caffeinated energy drinks are considered crazy. I've tried mixing alcohol and energy drinks and I agree with your comment. The alcohol buzz and impairment of judgement, coupled with an excess surge of energy is a little dangerous. Plus, it keeps people awake, drinking and partying longer. How about regulating the variety of drinks a person can be served as the sickest I've ever been is when I switch from beer to whisky back to beer then to Sambucca then someone gets the bright idea to have tequila shots. Tequila shots should be banned simply because they taste like armpits. Back to the energy drinks though. There is a warning right on the can that states they are not to be mixed with alcohol. I know energy drinks are different because people can easily chug it. But it's still just caffeine.
Mighty AC
You'll need to cite because I've never noticed that. Is the same warning available with coffee or soda? Soda has far lower caffeine levels and people like to pretend that coffee isn't a drug. If youth were consuming large quantities of coffee and booze, I imagine there would be talk of warnings. Anyway, all energy drinks in Canada contain that warning. Here is a shot of a Full Throttle can. The proposal in the OP didn't mention banning use to children, just not selling it at places where alcohol is also sold.

Considering the potential harm and the fact that the cans already contain warnings not to mix with booze, I think it's responsible for Toronto not to allow the drinks to be sold with booze on city property. It's a proposal without teeth. They're targeting public events where I doubt anyone could effectively stop someone from bringing an energy drink onto the premise. We're not talking about bars here. They're targeting public events where I doubt anyone could effectively stop someone from bringing an energy drink onto the premise. We're not talking about bars here.Well...yes they are talking about bars, explicitly talking about bars. If one requests a City of TO venue and liquor permit, then they have to toe the line. Thats means, no liquor/drinks are allowed to be brought in by patrons, all booze purchased from the LC, and any variation from that can mean sever penalties. But how often do events on city property have bars that would serve something like that? I'm thinking Street Events, Festivals, The Ex. Those aren't exactly places you go specifically to get bleepfaced. Edited August 14, 2014 by Boges
