Do you live in Detroit ? Go Tigers !

As for "neoliberalism", Detroit has actually been in decline since at least the '67 riots and liberal agenda, including organized labour demands that bankrupted manufacturers and the city.

It seems that the movie Robocop made a fairly accurate prediction of what Detroit would be like over 20 years ago. I travel to Detroit a few times per year. There are some nice suburbs but the city itself is a little scary and I don't feel safe there. Still, the Joe is a great place to watch a hockey game. Detroit has excellent hockey fans.

Cobo arena was torn down last time I checked. A new development is planned to give the Red Wings a new arena (demolishing Joe Louis Arena). This is important because it's the closest thing to Canada winning the Cup recently. Personally, I remember the "Joe" for the infamous Nancy Kerrigan ice skating attack by Tanya Harding's goons.. exciting drama for the ladies !

Yeah I believe the new rink will be north of the ball park and be part of a massive redevelopment of the area. New arenas are great, with better seating, sight lines, concessions, washrooms, etc. but I miss the feel of the old barns.

Detroit's "neoliberal" mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is serving a 28 year federal prison sentence for bribery, extortion, and racketeering. Never should have torn down Tiger Stadium, his most egregious crime of all.

Pretty cool that the city is helping build a billionaire a new palace for his millionaire employees to play when they can barely keep the lights on or ambulances on the streets.

It doesn't surprise me that you don't know what neo liberalism is.

Exactly black dog. Neo liberalism at its finest.

Oh, I'm pretty sure I do. Besides, you just import such concepts from U.S. media anyway. Got any original ideas ?

Aye, it is a shyte state of affairs in Motown. However, the $284M the public will kick into this $650M+ project will help redevelop a pretty ugly 45 block area and employ many people.

In a short period of time the city will be getting a new rink with commercial and residential areas, a new bridge to Canada and new rail lines. Hopefully, their infrastructure improvements can attract new business and new permanent jobs.

That's always the promise. It almost never works out that way, though. There's tons of case studies showing public funding for sports arenas are almost al;ways total scams that fail to deliver the promised public benefits while saddling taxpayers with additional costs.

Im with BD on this one.

Now if the State helped fund the arena...then ok .

But Detroit is so bad and will remain so for sometime, knowing they have a real hard time paying any bills, Cops Firemen city workers , it doesnt make any sense for the City to throw any money in the pot.

Afterall, if you LIVE in Detroit, you arent paying/affording tickets to a Wings game. Now the nice folks fo Bloomfield Hills certainly can and do.

No you're wrong. You're confusing when cities foot the entire bill. The Redwings will be paying the vast majority of the cost.

You're wrong as well. How much revenue in property taxes do you think the city is getting currently from the 45 blocks that will be involved in this project. Now compare it to what it will be after this project is completed.

iF by vast majority you mean less than half....cuz public money will cover 58%

 must be shady math taught in London.

Probably zero now.

They will have a 30 yr exemption....so...zero again ! Woo hoo !

Whos wrong now?

This in a city thats 18BILLION ind debt and currently the longest muni bankruptcy in American history....half the streetlights dont work, 58 minute response time for police (if they even show up-since they dont in certain spots), retirement bennies cut in half for retirees

Pretty shitty all the way around. Mike Illitch is a little short on cash these days, hes only worth $3.2 B.

Black Dog is right.

Nope, you're both wrong. You'd have to ignore the revitalization that Comerica Park and Ford Field have had. You'd also have to ignore the huge problem of unemployment in the city. Detroit isn't in debt because it's had too much construction, development and investment. It's people of your political ilk that have had control of Detroit for decades, and completely ruined it. Your say is over.

Yep...there's no more money for them to fritter away on corruption and union contracts. At least Marshall Mathers made a bundle on the decline.

I love watching so-called conservatives trip over themselves to defend government handouts to big business. Capitalism!

I doubt you really know what it is either. But I am sure you can match your trend and post an article that refutes your claim.

What about the hundreds of other blocks that no longer exist? You think that small increase is going to make up for the huge loss Detroit already experienced, and will continue to experience?

And if people don't have money to live, you think they want to spend their money on a sports game?

Posted

Hmm....your first angle is taxes, and pantsed on that one.

Then it was revitalization , none of which is occuring

Which is basically nothing to speak of. Oh well, they did get a new parking garage ! Woo hoo!

You'd also have to ignore the huge problem of unemployment in the city.

And a new field and arena brings in workers for 81 days of minimum wage in summer and 41 days of the same in winter.

Just for you shady, there are 365 days in a year.

Detroit isn't in debt because it's had too much construction, development and investment.

Gosh ya think? 18B in debt and more public money for the rich guys.

Man you flip flop like a fish on a dock.

It's people of your political ilk that have had control of Detroit for decades, and completely ruined it. Your say is over.

Not at all shady. You really should learn what happened in Detroit.

Criminals running the show, over paying on pensions and wages, flight from the inner city, movement of assmebly plants et al, ignorance.....

$18B in debt, half the streetlights dont work.
