Christine Elliott, the deputy leader of the Ontario PCs and widow of federal finance minister Jim Flaherty, will announce she will run to replace Tim Hudak as leader of the provincial Progressive Conservatives.

It looks like the race is on. Media coverage appears to favor Christine due to a number of factors.

Lisa Raitt, federal minister of transportation already has a web site supporting her. John Baird also has a similar 3rd person site and Tony Clement has also been mentioned.

Looks like those old Mike Harris politicians coming back to roost. I wonder if the right wing faction of the Ontario Conservatives led by Hillier and his rural gang will continue to hold power and continue to lose elections or will they finally smarten up, get those moderates back into the tent. This next election is theirs to lose.

Note - For those expecting a response from Big Guy: I generally do not read or respond to posts longer then 300 words nor to parsed comments.

IF she get the leadership, and I think she will, this should be interesting having 3 women as leaders and probably the first in provincial history in Canada.

The term 'leader' ought to imply a requirement of leadership abilities. Neither of the other two have any. Don't know about this one but I'm doubtful.

None of the female provincial premiers in Canada have been even halfway competent thus far.

I saw a bit of the press conference this morning.

She was talking about consulting with the grassroots and Ontarians to find out what they want and to review policies and programs in an effort to continue ones that work and get rid of ones that don't. It was a bit bland but, having said that, I'm not expecting too much at this point.

To me, a leader would be able to articulate a vision of what they want for the province and then have the ability to get that vision across to voters and get elected. On that one I don't think any of the leaders did that in this election.

It scares me when I hear people saying "the next election is the PC's to lose". It scares me because, to me at least, it's a sign of people accepting lowered expectations from the PCP, both in who they vote for and what they will accept as a platform.

In this leadership race I hope to get excited about what at least one of the contestants has to say about their own vision.

Yep. Back to huge deficits, huge debt, and a crappy economy.

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ontario_government_debt

The Mike Harris-led Progressive Conservative government increased the debt from $90.7 billion in 1994-1995 to $132.6 billion in 2002-2003, even while drastically cutting services and downloading formerly provincially-run services onto the municipalities.

I think Mike Harris fans are Mike Harris fans, regardless of the facts.

So you're upset that Harris didn't balance the budget in his first year?

Ok, now do the Liberal debt since 2003!

Liberal-Conservative ... all the same to me! ;)

You do it.

Btw ... Rae and McGuinty went through recessions.

Harris didn't, and he still added $6b/yr in debt.

No you're wrong. Harris did balance the budget. You're confusing debt with deficit. If you're going to discuss such fiscal issues, you should at least get a grasp of the basics. Regardless, they're not all the same. But that's a great cop-out answer and relieves you from any critical thinking. And the fact that you won't cite the debt increase since Harris left office proves my point. Please come back when you're serious about a discussion.

I am talking about debt.

Nah, I don't care.

You know where the link is.

Harris's common sense revolution didn't do anyone any good. The only municipalities created was the GTA and Kent County turned Chatham -Kent and from reading the paper down there, the rural areas aren't happy with the Mayor or council. Then Harris had the police against the unions and the First nation and there's also the fact there were people who died because of the stress and the mess that HE created. I bet if asked those two areas would like to go back before the Harris era.
