Smallc Posted April 21, 2014 Report Posted April 21, 2014 (edited) My fiancée is aboriginal, and I find the idea of this pretty offensive. Dating based on race? Attitudes like this really don't belong in 2014. This is similar to the ideas put forward by the Nazis in relation to blood purity and the worth of individuals. Who cares about your ancestry or your race, or, when it comes to love and personal interactions, even your culture? People's worth shouldn't be judged on such things. We're all human beings. http://www.cbc.ca/m/news/#!/content/1.2615016 Edited April 21, 2014 by Smallc Quote
Accountability Now Posted April 21, 2014 Report Posted April 21, 2014 (edited) From the looks of this article, it has nothing to do with race, culture, love or personal interations. Its all about having the ability to retain Indian Status....in other words.....getting the benefits from the federal government. She even says in her article: "Just so we are on the same page, I use the word “Indian” because I’m making reference to the Indian Act in Canadian law, not because I like or approve of the word." Yet....she goes on to use the word Indian a number of other times especially when talking about retaining 'status'. Since when does the government have to tell you what your heritage is? I guess only when there are dollar signs involved. Edited April 22, 2014 by Charles Anthony deleted Opening Post re-copied in quotes Quote
Smallc Posted April 21, 2014 Author Report Posted April 21, 2014 It's a disgusting view of things, no matter what her reasons. Quote
Boges Posted April 21, 2014 Report Posted April 21, 2014 (edited) Lots of cultures don't like people "dating" or "marrying" outside of their racial or cultural group. Edited April 21, 2014 by Boges Quote
Smallc Posted April 21, 2014 Author Report Posted April 21, 2014 And should we be okay with that? Quote
Boges Posted April 21, 2014 Report Posted April 21, 2014 Nope, just saying no racial or cultural group is immune to this problem. I've found the best way for this to change is more integration. You have a family that has lived in Canada for enough generations they no longer identify with the cultural group of their heritage. If First Nations insist on living a part from the ROC on reserves I doubt this philosophy will change. Quote
Smallc Posted April 21, 2014 Author Report Posted April 21, 2014 That's really the issue isn't it? I was chastised in another thread for my lack of sympathy for the horrible conditions on reserves. The irony of that of course, is that I want to fix that...elimination of reserves as they currently exist and the integration into wider society of aboriginal society is what's needed for that to happen. The irony of that, of course, being that I make a very good living off of the fact that a reserve exists. Quote
The_Squid Posted April 21, 2014 Report Posted April 21, 2014 There is enought to criticize/discuss without needing to compare her to Nazis... The hyperbole is just plain silly. Nazis indeed. Quote

I said it was similar to the basis of the idea. The purity of blood. The point was that it's disgusting, it wasn't an attention to compare it to WWII Quote

Smallc Posted April 21, 2014 Author Report Posted April 21, 2014 (edited) I said the foundation of the idea was the same, not the method of control. Perhaps you had something to add? Edited April 21, 2014 by Smallc Quote

Attitudes like this really don't belong in 2014. I have no problem with this woman's choice. Attitudes like this certainly do belong in 2014. She has chosen to marry and have children with someone from her race. What is the problem here? This is the beauty of living in a country such as ours. Some cultures here in Canada still practice pre-arranged marriages and that's ok too. It's their choice. To quote this woman: "My search for love has been a complex terrain to tread, but I feel that I’m now on the right path to ensure that my future generations are strong in their indigenous roots and grounding — even if that means I have to take longer to find love than most." Quote I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. Life's a bitch. You've got to go out and kick ass. - Maya Angelou

WestCoastRunner Posted April 21, 2014 Report Posted April 21, 2014 Would you feel the same if she were white? Of course. As I said before, It's none of my business who anyone marries. WestCoastRunner Posted April 21, 2014 Report Posted April 21, 2014 What if she married a native woman and had a native man inseminate her or her partner. I suppose that would bother you too. Smallc Posted April 21, 2014 Author Report Posted April 21, 2014 Of course. As I said before, It's none of my business who anyone marries. Her criteria is racist. Not only that, it's based on the false premise of race (one which you seem to share). There aren't races of humans. We're all the same race. Also, I doubt you'd actually be as sympathetic if she wanted her children to be at least a certain percentage Italian, to keep the blood pure. Quote
