It addresses nothing. Protesting a woman who, as far as our system is concerned, is nothing but a private citizen does nothing. Protesting at a well intentioned charity event does nothing positive for your cause. This woman was rude and out of place, and nothing more than that. Further to that, her entire world view is simply wrong. It seems that aboriginal woman, adults are not, are not responsible for themselves, and that somehow they mean more than women of other ethnicities....at least, according to her and so many others.

And before you start, I have an aboriginal fiancée.

Your aboriginal fiancee has really nothing to do with this. But, congratulations on your engagement.

Her world view is probably more of a community view. And, like I say, the press interviewed her and reported on the issue. Good on her and the press!

So you're criticizing the newspaper for giving more coverage to missing and murdered aboriginal women than homeless cats?

Classy.

Don't be a dolt - and disrespectful. Homeless cats is a one-day story about a charity. The "missing aboriginal women" dilemma has been around for 20 years - if not longer - driven by alcohol, drug and prostitution abuse. It disgusts me that the media gives attention to this idiot and others like that bimbo Brigitte Depape. If the media is serious about an issue, do some serious investigative reporting and keep it at the forefront of their news coverage - but don't spoil what otherwise is a well-intentioned charity.

This is precisely why the heckler made an issue. It is not at the forefront of news coverage and it is a very serious issue. And I am quite sure the cat charity event was not spoiled in any way.

My beef is with the media. Is it too much trouble to print two stories - one that talks about the charity - and one that deals with the Missing Women? My issue is not so much with the protester - as it is with the media coverage.....and you are simply confirming that fact. That's why I consider the coverage to be shameful.

And I doubt the cause of aboriginal women was helped in any way.

Well, actually, the press did a separate interview with her the next day to cover the missing women story. And if you think the press is honest and has scruples, think again.

I am not so sure about that. Any coverage is good for missing women, regardless of the nationality. How do you think it was not helped? Because of the racism?

We are in a time where everyone with an agenda feels that the problem with their cause is that it is not getting the attention that it deserves. So now we are into making people "aware" of an issue - because the end result of people being "made aware" justifies the means. This can vary from a monk immolating himself in the public square to someone heckling during another event where there many people and media coverage. There are those who feel that a pie in the face during a televised event is the equivalent of paying for $1 million in TV ads. And it probably is. Disrupting events works only because the media feeds it.

I await the day when someone with a "cause" tries to interrupt a presidential press conference and end up with a bullet in the head.

I personally don't care about your cause especially if it is represented by some jerk disrupting a charity event.

I also automatically turn off on any cause where a passionate advocate decides that I "should" be exposed to it.

Well, to be clear here, it is not my event nor my cause. I am just sticking up for the heckler (who you assume to be a jerk). And of course, that is the beauty of television. You can turn the channel or you can stay tuned and listen to the violence that is affecting canadian women (sisters, mothers, aunts, cousins, daughters, etc). You get my drift.

Because bad behavior can piss off as many people as not, even if it is in a good cause.

No sorry she is using her celebrity to bring awareness to her charity.

And the protestor was clever to use this event to raise awareness for her cause! It actually brings attention to both causes!

You're getting pissed off at someone who is helping attract media attention to cat abuse.

Yes, as we can see in this thread. I am puzzled as to how to enlighten folks as to the disparity of policing etc across racial lines. It is a very serious issue.

What I've taken from this story is that Laureen Harper needs to get some charity advice from JT. From what I've read, she didnt get paid anything. When Justin does charity work, he makes sure he gets the Benjamins!!!

Anyways, much of Michelle Obama's work deals with exercise and youth fitness. Can she still pursue that, or does she need to also talk about aboriginal women?

That's a good point!

Maybe Laureen would consider other charities too!

But I don't think Justin is going to be doing any charities for money anytime soon. He's probably too busy looking at himself in the mirror practising his poses.

As you can see, I am passionate about issues regarding women and children. I will do everything I can to contribute to this and that includes dismissing posts that do nothing to advance this issue.

Then ignore it and report my comment.( Charles A. is big on that stuff I hear)

You're not the only one here that has an opinion on this protest.

If you feel so strongly about it, then start a thread about missing aboriginal women or something like that.

You're very passionate when it comes to issues regarding women and children. That's why I've enjoyed reading your posts supporting the important issues pushed by Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Oh wait, nevermind.

Missing and murdered women would be a great cause for the wife of the PM. But I guess homeless cats is a bit easier...and wouldn't cause any uncomfortable conversations at home.

Very typical of you. Playing one thread against another. Can you not speak to this thread alone to support your argument? I'm not sure what the hell your argument is, except to disrupt this thread to instill your bs.

Seriously, why are we having this argument? It is truly a no brainer.

Why can't people champion the causes they want to? Seriously, we don't live in a one issue reality.

I never said they couldn't. I love cats. I'm simply saying that I would rather have my PM's spouse be a little deeper in substance than homeless cats.

Let's face it, not a lot of depth coming from either of the Harpers. A few scandals perhaps but that's about it. In her little retort to the heckler, (which I'm not so much in favor of in any situation) Mrs. Harper seemed equate dead people, whatever their background, to homeless cats. I was a bit shocked, and a bit saddened. We seem to be at a new low with federal politics.
