socialist Posted July 26, 2014 Author Report Posted July 26, 2014 Young Socialist, where have you been, you little Scamp. We missed your inane comments around here. So, a grade twelve student writes a letter and this is newsworthy to you. Well, I guess that makes sense as she is likely your peer. But, let us take a look at what she says. First off she states that she likes public school more than private school so much that she cannot wait to get there every day. And this must be true because she goes there 279 days a year, which is odd given that teachers "work" about 185 days a year (can you imagine a job where you get one day off for every day worked!?!?). But, hang on. Our whiny teachers here in BC are always harping that the "over-crowded" classrooms are not conducive to student learning. Young Justine obviously missed that part of her teachers indoctrination. But her greatest mistake is asking in a letter to the Premier just when she will be able to write exams and attend class. Hmmmm, shouldn't she be asking Mr Iker that question. Or maybe at her tender age, she does not realize that it is the greedy, whiny teachers who have withdrawn their services because the mean old government will not provide them with massages and Viagra. When one group is on strike there Justine, they and they alone can call it off and get back to work. The government is gutting public education. This hurts kids. Here is an example of funding in Saanich. Maybe this will help you understand the shortfalls. http://www.scribd.com/doc/231322245/Letter-to-Minister-Fassbender-Funding-in-SD-63-Saanich Thankful to have become a free thinker.

So many successive Liberal governments have turned this country into a immoral mess by pushing the liberal agenda onto our children. It's not up to educators like you nor the government to teach my children values. It's up to me as a parent to instill my personal beliefs and values on my children. They're MY children. Not the state's. Not yours.

NoneOfTheAbove Posted July 27, 2014 Report Posted July 27, 2014 Students need to know their place and shut their mouths. They don't pay taxes and until they're 18 they don't vote. So they shouldn't even consider addressing the Premier until they become adults, get jobs, have responsibilites, and start paying taxes. Oh wow, this has got to be the silliest comment I have read in ages.

Pct2017 Posted July 28, 2014 Report Posted July 28, 2014 We'll see how much support the government has when teachers refuse to coach sports and run music programs. The BC government is playing hardball and will strike out. Many dedicated teachers are walking the picket lines over the summer. Their spirits won't be broken. As I have tried to impart in you many, many times, public opinion matters not a whit in this strike. There will be pressure come October to legislate the whiny teachers back, but that will come from the whiny teachers who will have gone three or so months between paycheques, and no strike pay due to the embezzling ways of the BCTF. The average teacher at that point will be begging the Liberals to legislate their sorry asses back to work, and they will gladly accept the same offer that was available to the in June of 2013. As for the dedication of teachers out walking the picket lines, well you really are not from BC or even you would know what a joke that statement is. Here in my town, a new roof is being put on one of the middle schools with nary a picketing teacher to interfere. And the high school band camp went ahead on school property, put on by BCTF members. The lingering question being asked around here is are the teachers on strike or on their annual bloated summer holidays. If they are on strike, they are certainly non-committal.
Boges Posted July 28, 2014 Report Posted July 28, 2014 Work to Rule campaigns always make people sympathetic towards teachers. . . actually no they never do.

And Viagra. And massages. And paid time off when their cousin's best friends hamster dies. Yup, they really are fighting the selfless fight to put as much gold in their own pockets as humanly possible. Man, it is a long leap from there to fighting for democracy, but I guess we all have our own belief systems. Yours are just a wee bit loopier than most.

Most get part time jobs over the summer months because they choose to be paid over a 9 month period & then claim they need to work part time .. Hogwash!! As for reducing class size ... I went to high school and was in a class of 36 students and am not illiterate. Teachers taught what they should be teaching years ago and not sex, gender equality, blah, blah, which should not be on their curriculum. I had 3 teachers living next door to me .. they were home from school before my child was. They had a swimming pool, we could not afford one. They drove two vehicles, we could not afford two - one of us took public transit to work. They went on exotic holidays and we went camping. If we can live on less so can teachers. As for special needs kids .. good luck with that one. My child needed special needs and teachers refused to help so I hired a tutor. I can write a book as to why I have lost respect for teachers,. Yes, there are a few good ones that actually teach because they love teaching and then there are those who want to be paid to help a student tells me they are in it for the pay and long vacations & not the love of teaching. Current class size should not affect teaching if the teacher is good and gets the message across to the student. We also have a teacher in the family who is now retired from teaching and said teachers have never had it so good as compared to the past. They live a good life, better than most who must live on less. I am all for rating teachers on their performance - if they score high, they get a year end bonus. If not, no bonus and told to pick up their socks. As a taxpayer, I am not a bottomless pit that can support luxuries demanded by teachers. Edited July 28, 2014 by matilda

socialist Posted July 29, 2014 Author Report Posted July 29, 2014 Strikes don't help the students at all. They do in the long run when they expose poor ;learning conditions and a lack of funding. Also, teachers shouldn't have to spend thousands of dollars to properly equip their classrooms. Thankful to have become a free thinker.

TimG Posted August 1, 2014 Report Posted August 1, 2014 (edited) I do agree. Put that money into the education system in BC.Except the BCTF is putting lining their pockets ahead of the needs of the education system. There is a certain justice about taking the money saved by not paying striking teachers and giving it directly to parents. It is a brilliant move by the government. It also means the BCTF can't expect to get the lost wages back as a signing bonus which may motivate them to settle sooner Edited August 1, 2014 by TimG
WestCoastRunner Posted August 1, 2014 Report Posted August 1, 2014 Except the BCTF is putting lining their pockets ahead of the needs of the education system. There is a certain justice about taking the money saved by not paying striking teachers and giving it directly to parents. Not true as far as the public is concerned. If you listen to the parents calling in to cbc radio and other media, they are absolutely against this charade. They want this money put towards the education system instead of lining parents pockets with 40.00 a day. They can see past Christie Clark. And I am a Christie Clark support for the most part but I disagree with her on this very major issue. We need to put money back into the education system. I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. Life's a bitch. You've got to go out and kick ass. - Maya Angelou

They want this money put towards the education system instead of lining parents pockets with 40.00 a day.The biggest barrier to a settlement is the BCTF with wage demands that the government cannot possibly meet.
