August1991 Posted October 30, 2013 Report Posted October 30, 2013 (edited) Well, there are four possibles: 1) Denis Coderre, a federal Liberal, Chretien retread 2) Mélanie Joly, a Young Liberal with PR skills, Barbie lookalike. Link 3) Richard Bergeron, the Plateau-Berkeley pro-bicycle candidate 4) Marcel Côté, an elderly consultant/policy wonk, once a mover-shaker Ever the question in Quebec: The first two are federalists. The second two are "undeclared", meaning they sadly lose alot of votes in Montreal. At the outset, a few weeks ago, I would have guessed Coderre. Now, I have to say that Joly has a chance. Sadly (IMHO), Côté does not understand democratic politics. The election is partly a referendum on Justin Trudeau but he has wisely distanced himself from any involvement. If Joly wins (surprisingly), Trudeau will gain the credit. If she loses and Coderre wins, Trudeau Jnr will suffer no loss. ----- Montreal municipal politics are like Canadian federal politics designed by the PQ - sovereignty-association with consultative committees to achieve la concertation. So, one candidate may win but another party may also win. Edited October 30, 2013 by August1991 Quote
cybercoma Posted October 30, 2013 Report Posted October 30, 2013 From the news I've been reading, it sounds like Joly is the early favourite. Quote
waldo Posted October 30, 2013 Report Posted October 30, 2013 (edited) 2) Mélanie Joly, a Young Liberal with PR skills, Barbie lookalike. some, certainly not the waldo, might suggest the "Barbie lookalike" reference smacks of some degree of misogyny. Lawyer, journalist and a managing director of a public relations firm..... oh, and... chief organizer for Trudeau's leadership campaign during the 2013 Liberal Party of Canada leadership election. That last lil' ditty wouldn't have anything to do with your "Barbie lookalike" labeling, would it? Edited October 31, 2013 by waldo Quote

Of course, our society isn't sexist and doesn't wrap women's value up in their physical attractiveness. Quote
The_Squid Posted October 31, 2013 Report Posted October 31, 2013 August, that's a misogynest/sexist assessment of Ms Joly. Not nice at all. Quote
August1991 Posted November 1, 2013 Author Report Posted November 1, 2013 She's hot.Her face is plastered on posters all over Montreal now. LIV are asking: who's the hot chick? Allophones/Anglophones are asking, is she a federalist? Quote
August1991 Posted November 1, 2013 Author Report Posted November 1, 2013 (edited) From the news I've been reading, it sounds like Joly is the early favourite. She was never the "early favourite". If anything, she's the dark horse, "late favourite". Some people are accusing Joly of use this candidacy to advance her "career". Denis Coderre is leading in all the polls that I have seen. I would bet that he will be elected Mayor but I could be wrong. Edited November 1, 2013 by August1991 Quote

August1991 Posted November 6, 2013 Author Report Posted November 6, 2013 (edited) All to point out ... does "lookalike" really matter? Or is it just a way to denigrate candidates ... the female candidate in particular? Gimme a break. The main reason Joly did as well as she did is because of her smart, dramatic posters. ------ Jacee, municipal politics in a large city are the hardest politics of all for a newcomer. Compared to a small town where there's lots of gossip, word-of-mouth, have-you-heard, in a large city there is only anonymity and an echo-chamber of a small group of friends, if that. To make oneself known in a small town requires a different talent than to make oneself known in a big city where a big splash ($$$) attracts attention. -- Charlie Chaplin was the world's first celebrity. Nowadays, in such a world of large cities, it's hard to be known. Edited November 6, 2013 by August1991 Quote

Eventually we came onside on Haiti, so we got another arrow in our quiver." --Bill Graham, Former Canadian Foreign Minister, 2007
