Alberta Awards Alberta.

The man has serious dementia, I don't think that is an occasion to make jokes. He did a lot for Alberta and I think that even if Layton, Ignatieff or Dion were PM that they would do the same thing by awarding him the OoC.

Klein was a long-serving premier who was a dependable advocate for national unity at the federal level. He is a worthy recipient if anyone is.

PM's and Premiers should get the order by default after one term is complete, unless they loose their position due to illegality (i.e. criminal conviction) So should the grand chief / council leader.

I think that this is in part because they forever reamain in a sense a premier with special status, as well, they are privy council (for life) the argument exists that perhaps all p.c. should get the order, as it is a life long oath and duty (unless they become disqualified (are removed from privy council if that is possible..) thus the position automatically denotes a lifetime of service to the federation.

But I geuss they need to be nominated....

Is that supposed to insinuate that Harper (an "Alberta man") awarded Klein (definitely an Alberta man) with appointment to the Order of Canada? If so, you must have no understanding of how the Order of Canada works.

That is already essentially the case, especially for prime ministers. (Provinces have their own orders into which ex-premiers are normally appointed.)

From what I'm aware there is a selection committee for the order.

Yes, there is an advisory council. The Order of Canada was set up precisely so as to be quite distant from the government and parliament; it was the first (I believe) national order of merit to be constituted that way (unlike, say, the UK's Order of the British Empire, appointments into which are approved by the Cabinet).

The Order is not for policy or politicking but for dedication. You could agree or disagree with him but never ignore him. I think he gave his life and sanity to his job. Besides, there will soon be an extra one available when they get Conrad Black’s medal back.

Note - For those expecting a response from Big Guy: I generally do not read or respond to posts longer then 300 words nor to parsed comments.

That wasn't Ralph Klein. That was a National Energy Program era bumper-sticker. Klein didn't enter provincial politics until 10 years later.

The sycophantism in many of these messages is nauseating.

Its as if Politicians didn't actually get paid for what they do. As if it was some sort of glorious sacrifice deserving of reward to be in positions of power.

Of course they get paid for what they do, but the pay is not even remotely reflective of the sacrifices that are made as a public figure like Ralph Klein was.

Who are you calling a pathetic grovelling sycophant lackey? Do you even know what those words mean? Because they sure as hell don't apply to my relationship or opinions of Klein.

Not sure how I'm being servile to a man with Alzheimer's that lives across the country. His response seems like a pretty stupid thing to say without him explaining or contextualizing it.

And besides kairos is arguing that people shouldn't be praised for doing something when it's their job. Imagine doing a job your whole life and never being praised because your boss keeps saying, "that's what you're paid for. Get back to work."
