August1991 Posted November 11, 2012 Author Report Posted November 11, 2012 (edited) All religious people are nut jobs if they actually take it seriously.Do you include agnostics and non-believers as "religious people"?But smallc, I have a much bigger question. Some people act because of a "calling", they often are "religious people". They are nuns or priests. They work as teachers, nurses or in charities. IMV, a successful civilised society has different institutions. IOW, there is not enough money in the world if the government tries to perform the tasks of family, or religion. WWWTT Posted November 11, 2012 Report Posted November 11, 2012 Define "religious nutjobbery". Every US president, save one, has been a Protestant. According to your logic AW, anyone who is not a Protestant is a "nutjob" - because so few (1) get elected. Beautiful August! We disagree more than agree, but it's good to see you you are on your toes! August1991 Posted November 11, 2012 Author Report Posted November 11, 2012 I have seen people do crazy things under the influence of religion. And I have seen people "do crazy things" because they believe in socialism, the government as State monopoly. Quote

Yes, I know, you don't like that I saw Obama winning months before the election, and you didn't see it the day of. I don't like religion. I like it less and less all of the time. The idiotic things that people will justify in its name. What's wrong, more relationship problems? Massive ones, but that's completely unrelated. Quote
Guest American Woman Posted November 11, 2012 Report Posted November 11, 2012 On the contrary, it was the "nutjobs" (Methodists, crazy Lutherans, Quakers) who ran away to America. So what, exactly, made them "nutjobs?" Just the fact that they were Methodists, Lutherans, Quakers? Furthermore, our religious "nutjob" forefathers wrote freedom of religion and separation of church and state into our government. Doesn't sound like "religious nutjobbery" to me. Define "religious nutjobbery". Every US president, save one, has been a Protestant. According to your logic AW, anyone who is not a Protestant is a "nutjob" - because so few (1) get elected. I'll define "religious nutjobbery" simply by pointing out that everyone who has religious beliefs is not a "nutjob." As for your conclusion about my logic, there is no logic to it as my response indicates no such thing. Quote

I said people who take it seriously....as in, they think it's the real deal, by which to live your life. You think there are people who believe in God who don't take it seriously? But of course insulting only those who "live their lives" according to their beliefs are "nut jobs" is so much better - there's nothing crazier than someone who lives their life according to the teachings of Jesus, eh? And to refresh your memory, you said that "religion is a disease of the brain," which pretty much says that all people who believe have a disease of the brain. You might want to take a good look in the mirror before you criticize and insult any religious people. Edited November 11, 2012 by American Woman Quote

Pretty common view among atheists, actually. We get very frustrated when the only think standing in the way of making a sensible and just decision is the word of God. Quote

Argus Posted November 11, 2012 Report Posted November 11, 2012 Conrad Black has a rather more bearish view of the US outlook and politics. I find it somewhat pessimistic but without changes, not unlikely. A shocking $3-billion was spent to keep a failed administration and mediocre congressional leaders (House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid) in place, operating a system that is very corrupt and is almost completely dysfunctional. Almost nothing worthwhile was said during the campaign about anything substantial. There is nothing in any of it to celebrate. An incumbent president was re-elected to a second term with fewer electoral votes than he had the first time — the first time this has happened. http://fullcomment.nationalpost.com/2012/11/10/conrad-black-the-obama-disaster-part-ii/ Quote "A liberal is someone who claims to be open to all points of view — and then is surprised and offended to find there are other points of view.” William F Buckley

But that's primarily based on Obama taking the lead on several issues, and proposing actual plans, ON PAPER, for each branch of government to negotiate over. It's really going to take presidential leadership. Quote
