There's no good reason for this.

A Koran-burning U.S. preacher has been held up at the border so long he won’t make it to Toronto in time for a free-speech debate, his church said.

Florida pastor Terry Jones had expected to enter Canada Thursday morning and participate in the event at the legislature in the early evening. But a staff member at his church said that he had been held more than three hours by repeated searches and questioning.

“He believes that the border control is delaying him deliberately to prevent him getting to the event in Toronto in time,” said Fran Ingram, who has been getting text-message updates from Mr. Jones.

She said that the border officers asked repeatedly about a provocative movie, The Innocence of Muslims, that spurred protests that left dozens dead. Mr. Jones helped promote the movie, argues it is “historically true” and had planned to defend it tonight. She said the guards also confiscated two signs, one which equated Islam with Nazism and one which had been erected at the Florida church to identify it as a Koran-burning site.

Mr. Jones is now planning to speak in Toronto Friday, provided he is allowed into the country, leaving organizers of the Thursday evening debate to enlist one of their unidentified understudies.

I'm hearing on the radio that the reason immigration is giving is that Jones says he's a doctor and there's no evidence that he is one. rolleyes.gif

I don't support his views but he should have the right to say those things. There's no reason to not allow him into Canada.

En route to the 2005 Rue Morgue Festival of Fear horror convention in Toronto, Fred Vogel was stopped by Canadian customs officers for transporting merchandise across the border; the officers confiscated the contents of his van, including Toetag promotional materials as well as copies of Mordum and the original August Underground, and shortly thereafter Vogel was arrested for smuggling obscene materials into Canada. While the Toetag merchandise was undergoing "further inspection" in Ottawa, Vogel was held in a Canadian customs jail; after roughly ten hours, he was released and charges were dropped.

Stephanie Sapp, a spokesperson for Jones, said Canada Border Services held Jones at the Canada-U.S. border in Windsor for more than four hours before denying him entry. Sapp said the reason for refusing his entry was based on a disturbing the peace charge in Michigan, which she says was dropped.

Jones also was fined in Germany for using the title doctor but they did not recognize his doctorate in theology, according to Sapp.

I can't support any restriction on free speech. Let the schmuck in and monitor him.

The two are not linked though.

We do however let people in who have criminal records, but thats a call CBSA makes at the time.

He can say whatever he wants. He doesn't have a definitive right to enter Canada.

Sure but to deny him access because he may offend Muslims (or has offended them in the past) is pretty sketchy for a country is supposed to support Free Speech.

I don't believe he's ever advocated violence against Muslims.

The event he was meant to go to was a cross-faith discussion. Not just a Muslim hating jamboree.

He's a danger to the peace in this country. He doesn't need to come in to be heard.

Is there any evidence there would be a riot if he attended an event? And if there was, that would sort of lend credence to his claims. huh.png

It's happened elsewhere, and he doesn't exactly have the best record with peaceful, constructive, discussion.

Lots of people don't. Doesn't mean it's not right to let him into a country.

Again he's never advocated violence against anyone. His only real extreme action was burning a Quran.

Do you think someone who burns a Bible shouldn't be allowed into the US?

Ironic that he's being denied freedom of speech in a debate on free speech. I don't think this speaks well for Canada.

He is not a citizen so therefore does not have the right to enter Canada.

I don't think they denied him because he may offend Muslims per se. border agents primarily are concerned with the security of Canada and not letting people in who are a threat to the country's security. Even though it really wouldn't be Jones' fault, him entering Canada and speaking in Muslim-heavy Toronto has a significant likelihood of leading to violence and hence his presence is in a way a threat to the security for Canadians. So I can see why the border refused his entry. I'm not sure it's right though.

And ironically Jones burned the Koran which proves he is against free speech.

This is probably the third or fourth post where you've said or implied that he was denied entry because of his political views. That's not why he was denied entry. As spurious as the reasons may have been, he does not have some fundamental right to enter the country.

That is an incorrect assessment. If he banned others from having access to a Koran, he would be against freedom of speech. Simply burning a book he possesses is not anti-speech.

Is the one who burns a book a threat to security, or the one who commits the violent act in response? Maybe we should reconsider who we bar from the country.
