As long as Canada wants/needs them to last, 'cause you ain't getting any new ones for sure except maybe in the Edmonton Mall.

Aye, our sub building these days is of the midget variety. But, I feel that these Victoria class machines would be an ideal target for some newer Rooshin made ASW system let alone a beast like a Virginia class.

Well, it turns out that a small diesel-electric on the battery is very difficult to detect without going active. So I would expect lots of exercises with the US Navy, just like the Aussies' Collins class. These boats are fine for coastal operations and day ops out of good facilities with dedicated support, but you have to spend the money on maintenance availabilities and refit periods.

They are like very expensive pets that you have to paint a lot.

So was the U-Boat until somebody coughed. Then it was Hedgehog city.

Sweet.

Hehe...that was good.

That's the trouble with things like submarines, though, I suppose. A $300 shaped charge can undo that Octopus's Garden in one pop.

That's the game....don't ever get detected. A 35mm hole would not lead to hull loss for a well trained crew.

My last Silent Hunter title was Wolves of the Pacific.

"Hunt, hide, and KILL in the Pacific!"

The Pacific was a very cool submarine war. Romantic in a 'South Pacific' sort of way. From the Allied POV, that is. It was punishment for an IJN DD/DE to be sent on ASW/Convoy duty. So plenty of poorly escorted tankers/troop ships coming from exotic locals. US subs rarely went after warships. They were ususally targets of opportunity doing 20+ knots. Not an easy shot for those crappy early War torps. The strategic target was the lowly 5kt merchantman. Much, much easier. The deck gun might be able to handle it.

;)

On the Japanese side, you had a different war, with bigger subs on what amouted to suicide missions. Their special subs were pretty cool, you have to admit. Lucky their plan to bomb the locks at Panama didn't work out. That would have been a frickin' disaster. The IJN sub crews were, unfortunately, reponsible for some truely horrific war crimes against sailor, soldier, civilian, alike. The Allies quickly learned sharks had more mercy as tales got around. They leaned never to pick-up a Japanese sailor, as well. Most carried grenades.

Much more "romantic" than for Admiral Doenitz, but still unrestricted submarine warfare.

I like the ship tattoo on Ray Walston's ("My Favorite Martian") belly in South Pacific.

Yes...and the ship's cook always has to be a 'character'.

:P

This one is great for that strategic feeling of running the whole Guadalcanal/New Guinea campaign, land sea and air. Detail rather than high grahics.

Wasn't this deal cancelled after the 1993 election, after voters voted for the party that said they'd cancel the deal?

At least we can comfort ourselves that by 2017 we should finally have completed the 1993 order.

...Unless Canadians vote for a party that wants to cancel it again.

Neat video. Most of the Sea King shots bring back a lot of nostalgia for “better days”………The “star” in the video, RCN # 4001, later “reborn Stinger (12)401, was one of six converted to “B2” HELTAS standard with a towed array sonar in the early 90s, sadly her flying days ended here (HMCS Iroquois) in 2003......AFAIK, she's now a training aide at Shearwater.....
