In the 16 years that Conservatives have been in office since 1963, they have run just two surpluses – the first two years of the Harper government. These surpluses were inherited from the Paul Martin government that, together with the previous Chrétien government, ran nine consecutive years of surpluses.

The Harperites took a $13.8-billion surplus inherited from the Martin government and made it a $5.8-billion deficit in 2008. Since then, the Harperites have presided over $111-billion in deficits.

This record does not suggest a government fixated on frugality, which after all just gets people mad when programs are cut or services are reduced.

And apparently they love to speak out of both sides of their mouths...

“This is all about who you represent,” Mr. Dewar (NDP) said. “We’re (NDP) talking about representing the interests of working people and everyday Canadians and they [the Conservatives] are about representing the fund managers who come in and fleece our companies and our country.

Are you saying that the Global Financial crisis hd NOTHING to do with this?

And what kind of announcements were they? There was the business fund announcement but nothing else...

You mean the Global Financial crisis which Harper and Flaherty said didn't exist when it was obvious to all....

They had Conservative MP's running all across the country tossing money around like it was nothing...

Perhaps you should try reading the comments. Clearly, your boys have lost it.

And the weather! It's so hot!

The conservatives are personally responsible for global warming!

So what if they said that the Global Financial Crisis didn't exist? Does it change ANYTHING? The world economy took a hit and I don't think Mr. Harper can be held responsible for the actions of any other government.

I would want some official report rather than someone who knows nothing explaining what the spending.

It shows that they don't know what they are doing.... they were floundering! They were just hoping that the policies put in place by previous governments would get them through it!

Bingo...

It takes a special kind to gloss over that basic fact, as Signals just did by posting an asinine response denying it mattered ;)

So they are not responsible in any way shape or form when it comes to the way Canada made it through the crisis? It was all the liberals and their policies that saw Canada through the crisis?

It doesn't matter, what matters is how they got us through the crisis. Predicting the crisis right but getting the response wrong might be more problematic.

Um, you seem to be ignoring a basic fact that even before the recession which everyone but the self-proclaimed 'economist' that Harper claims to be and his sidekick in fiscal ignorance, Flaherty, saw coming.....

The Harperites took a $13.8-billion surplus inherited from the Martin government and made it a $5.8-billion deficit in 2008.

That was before....

A $13B surplus says to me the Liberals accumulated it by overtaxing Canadians. Why in hell would a government run a large surplus anyway if not to spread the money around to their friends at opportune times and bribe voters around election time with promises of entitlements. Sheesh!

Indeed... substitute surplus for the huge deficit which Harper has rung up and ask yourself why would they...

Which is what the article was all about...

How the Harperites are sucking and blowing at the same time....

Your failure to grasp the need for deficit spending shows just how economy-challenged you are.

Your failure to admit that the Conservatives are sucking and blowing at the same time, doing exactly what you railed against the Liberals for doing when there was money in the coffers to be spent, shows how ignorant you are of what makes for good fiscal sense. Edited by Rick

Obviously the Conservatives had to spend more than they probably wanted to due to the Minority government they had up until last year.

I remember in 2008 the Conservatives wanted to balance the budget but the opposition parties threatened to take over with a coalition government.

The CPC yielded and went into Keynsien economics mode.

People on the left criticize them for trying balance the budget now, they need to make up their minds.

You are right, BEFORE the Financial Crisis... Thank You for agreeing with me :D

Yes, the Harperites pissed away a huge surplus at a time when everyone but the short bus crew and their conbots saw a recession coming.

I know it hurts your head when you try to think, but it does not matter wether or not they saw the crisis coming, what matters is what they did to get us through it.
