TheNewTeddy
This http://www.mapleleafweb.com/forums//index.php?app=core&module=help&do=01&HID=17 is the ToS right? Just want to confirm as I've had to use the "Report" button today and want to ensure the things I'm reporting people for are actually things they are not permitted to do. Michael Hardner
Better known as the "rules and guidelines" - they're there in your navigation bar for easy reference. TheNewTeddy
I'm concerned that some of these rules, in particular the following. Do not post inflammatory remarks just to annoy people. If you are not bringing anything new to the argument, then do not say anything at all. Some messages are not so much offensive as simply nuisance value. An example would be a person who persistently creates conflict without contributing anything useful. In newsgroup circles, such a person is known as a "troll". We define "trolling" as a message that serves no constructive purpose and is likely to cause offence or arguments. We define "annoying" as any message that results in a complaint from a registered user -- we will then decide whether to take action. Insults levelled at third-parties (companies, political parties, nationalities) are also forbidden in the forums. These forums are not a free-for-all discussion area. Maple Leaf Web operates these forums in the hopes that they will promote intelligent, honest and responsible discussion. If at any time the discussion cease to be "intelligent" and "responsible" then the discussion will be ended. Mapleleafweb.com will attempt to monitor the content of the postings and reserves the right to delete any message for any or no reason whatsoever. We will also attempt to use this power judiciously and fairly, but our decisions are final. If for some reason your post has been deleted and you were not notified, please feel free to contact the admin and request an explanation. are not being adhered to with regard to a post that I've reported. cybercoma
I'm disappointed to say that those particular rules are not enforced at all anymore it seems. That was the nice thing about this forum at one time. The rules were designed to encourage intelligent discussion and debate, rather than opinionated and uninformed ranting. Michael Hardner
...are not being adhered to with regard to a post that I've reported. I'm confused - you reported the post because the rules weren't followed ? That's the correct response. Leave it to the moderators to take action - whether it be a warning to the offending poster, whether it be no response at all, or other actions that they see fit to take. Michael Hardner
That was the nice thing about this forum at one time. Also - saying that the forum used to be better was better in the past. cybercoma
Michael, you consistently try to raise the level of discourse here, but even you have to admit that the general tone of this forum has changed a great deal in just the last couple years. Honestly, cybercoma - I can't say. It may be because I'm too close to it, but I feel like this is like the "kids today are disrespectful" argument that they have advanced since the 1950s. I think we have clones and poor behaviorists who gallop in here and raise a lot of dust, then leave - and things get better after then. The_Squid
I think we have clones and poor behaviorists who gallop in here and raise a lot of dust, then leave - and things get better after then. I think your assessment is correct... However, the sooner these folks can be ushered out the door, the better the forum will be for it. Letting the "poor behaviourists" linger could discourage posting and a loss of membership from those folks who are "regulars". Quote Science flies you to the moon, Religion flies you into buildings. I think we have clones and poor behaviorists who gallop in here and raise a lot of dust, then leave - and things get better after then. I agree. Thanks in part to the insufferable spamming, I've recently looked at many decade-old posts. And while I admit it's only my impression, they seemed every bit as caustic and silly and full of invective as they do now. Mr.Canada
I used to be really bad when I first joined here but even I have calmed d own a lot. I used to be waaayy out in right field. Plus I was mean, spiteful and bordered on racist at times. Even though I am not I certainly appeared that way. Anyways I have learned my lesson and if I can I think that anyone can change. I miss some members that used to post here but seemingly no longer do. I mostly miss the ones who would argue with me a lot. A good argument is healthy for everyone. There is no place for racism or anti-semitism here on MLW imo. TheNewTeddy
Everyone changes. The old me would have ragequit over this. Michael Hardner
I do feel that things are improving, and if we're confessing on this thread then I will confess that misbehaving left-of-centre posters irk me more than misbehaving right-of-centre posters. Furthermore, my impression is that the longer one is on such boards, the less one identifies with the cookie-cutter right/left impressions that large scale mass media perpetuate. Guest American Woman
I do feel that things are improving, and if we're confessing on this thread then I will confess that misbehaving left-of-centre posters irk me more than misbehaving right-of-centre posters. As long as we're confessing, I confess that I would never know that by your comments/reprimands on the board. Perhaps you feel a need to go overboard in the other direction in light of your admitted 'bias,' lest you be perceived as acting on said bias. TheNewTeddy
I have a strong bias against those who are, to dumb it down as much as possible "mean". If you are rude or not tactful, chances are I'll call you out far more often than I will those who are friendly and nice. Regardless of what "side" of the debate you are on.
