A train from Niagara Falls has derailed. 3 VIA employees in the locomotive have been killed. Dozens of passengers have been injured.

I'm a bit of a self-proclaimed transit expert so I'll share what I know.

The Locomotive's "top" looks "smushed" and "ripped". This indicates to me that it made impact with something, either after it toppled over, or, prior to doing so (and thus would be the cause of the derailment). When the roof is ripped off the vehicle you are in things get ugly and it's understandable that the drivers have died.

Car #1 has tipped on it's side.

This can cause great injury, obviously, and possibly death. Hopefully no passengers have died.

Cars #2 and #3 came off the rails.

The rear of the train has sustained the least damage (which is standard in a derailment where the locomotive has derailed)

I've been on this train before and sometimes/normally it also carries passengers to and from the United States. There may have been people from the US on board. If so, they are always seated at the rear of the train in the last few cars. It does not appear as though there were any on board however.

So try to sit near the back? I will keep that in mind

Given that Argentina just had 60 + people die and 600 injured I think we should be fortunate our train derailments

aren't that extreme but its sad that peoples lives ended today

I'll be thinking good thoughts for their family and friends

I live a kilometre from the track this train was traveling on...I used to take this train when I was in college to go back to Toronto from Grimsby...

Occassionally,it IS an Amtrack train from NYC...

Ironically,I was on the GO train from the Appelby station in Burlington last week...

It sounds like Joe Brant and the Hamilton General are going to be busy tonight...

No way!!!

The track is hundreds of kilometres long. Tens of thousands of people, if not more, live one kilometre from the track. And no way, you were also at train station a week ago? Holy crap!
