I suspect that Wild Bill, and most members of this forum of course, also predicted that Russian citizens and their elected government would become an ally of the West and an enemy of "Red China" when they had won their freedom 20 years ago. :P

It would be true if the West treated Russia as an equal, which is what Russian always wants but the West won't give them, so just as everyone has seen, Russia has become an ally of China on this vote.

Somehow the West caused Russia, post 1991, to deteriorate into an alcohol and gang-fueled mess during the relatively free period under Yeltsin?

Hey, don't bother trying to convince me! You've got all those Arabs to convince!

As a humbly common individual, I'm not aware I'm so significiant that I need to convince anybody for China :P

As for China, honestly, as a rising great power, sometimes saying No is more convincing for showing its significance than always saying Yes.

Maybe Russian themselves should be responsible for the mess-up in their country after communist regime collapsed, but what about those new NATO members and missile shield bases around Russia?

Let's go back to the thread. If Russian may mess up their country after the dictatorship collapsed and then blame the West responsible for their woe, it is unlikely that those self-bombing-prone Arabian tribes will live in piece each other after their dictators were NATO-bombed down and will be grateful for what the West did for them.

China should just zip it when it comes to defending the veto. They're selfish boobs who care more about their own interests than human lives, we get it, no explanation needed. And Canada and whoever else wants to criticize them are a giant bunch of hypocrites because they do similar things, be it in the UN, the WTO, or a myriad of other conduits.

States are self-interested and act as such. Realism got that part bang-on.

Why care about other humans or the rest of the natural world if it doesn't benefit you, right?

I don't know why so much oxygen is wasted about the U.N. It's resolutions have no teeth. It has no purpose. The West should get out.

Would you rather go back to the days pre-WWII, with entangling alliances that led to much war (including a big reason for WWI)? Collective security seems to work pretty good, though not perfect, and since WWII many of the most moronic wars involving the great powers haven't been sanctioned by the UNSC.

Also, one of the most important benefits of the UN is that at least it gets everyone to the table. Incl. rival states that would otherwise barely if ever talk to each other. A history of the UN shows it has A LOT of useful purpose, and its flaws can't take that away.

I suspect that the citizens of Syria, when they have won their freedom, will remember who are their friends and who aren't. And they won't believe those who speak Chinese or Russian are their friends!

No doubt the rest of the brave people of other countries in that region who are involved in the "Arab Spring" movement have also seen for themselves.

Yes I just hope that the new leaders are an improvement just like the Taliban was supposed to be after they kicked out the Soviets.Oh wait thats a bad example!

Then maybe the Karzai government after NATO kicked out the Taliban.Oh but the Afgans are producing even more herion now and human rights have not changed at all.Not to mention the widespread corruption!Ok thats another bad example too!

I'm scratching my head trying to find a good example here please help.

Great post! Their hate and derangement of Stephen Harper has put them on the side of defending Russia and China, and essentially the Syrian regime. That's why we call it Harper Derangement Syndrome. :)

Did you ever wonder how many more people would die if the west went into Syria and started bombing targets?

Maybe you think that when the west kills people its a good thing but when anyone else kills people its a bad thing?

You are kidding aren't you?

Look at the proliferation of wars among many of its member states. And the flagrant disregard of the U.N. Charter of Rights in most of its member countries. If the thugocracies want to fund the U.N. who is stopping them? Why should I?

I think theres actually been a fair bit less war since the UN was formed. In any case, you pay because it gives you a veto on the UNSC.

As far as there being less war if you use base years 1914-1918 and 1939-1945 you'd be right. If you use the interwar period and the colonial ear ex-those periods you'd be dead wrong. As far as paying for a U.N. veto I'd rather spend the money helping real people.

China pays your share anyways... its not costing you a dime, and the veto is usefull for protecting your various proxies from the enforcement of international law, you can be sure the US has no plans of giving that up any time soon.

Yeah, if the UN was so useless why doesn't America give up its veto? It's just a toothless paper dragon anyway.

Because the politically correct crowd has made it impossible for even Reagan or Bush II to drop out of that high-speed train wreck.
