OTTAWA—Treasury Board President Tony Clement has apologized for insulting a 15-year-old boy during a Twitter spat over spelling mistakes.

Keith Pettinger, a student at Parry Sound High School, was following Clement’s Twitter feed on Saturday evening and decided to call out the cabinet minister on his spelling.

Clement, watching Hockey Night in Canada, said on Twitter: “Coach’s Corner gave me a lot to think about tonite.”

Pettinger shot back: “If you can’t spell, how can you run Canada’s treasury?” Then, in a subsequent tweet, he asked whether Clement would like to come to school with him and learn to spell properly.

Clement didn’t respond until Sunday, and then through the direct-message feature on Twitter, which only the recipient can see.

“Ha ha ur fnny,” Clement’s first tweet said. Then the minister accused Pettinger of misspelling “don’t know.”

“It’s ‘don’t know’ not ‘dunno.’ Jack ass (sic),” Clement said in his Twitter message to Pettinger.

What a petulant little brat.

"I'm so politically engaged that I'm going to correct the spelling of a public official!"

Is this what this kid really wants his 15 minutes of fame be all about?

What a petulant little brat.

I have to agree. Tony has a petulant streak in him and has for some time. He takes criticism poorly and is well known to be a lying blowhard.

Google Tony's famous "I saved drowning people" when in fact Tony didnt want to get wet and his elderly in laws were the ones who jumped in.

What really is so difficult about proper spelling and grammar?

The kid rocks in my books.

Nothing is difficult about it.

Tony is weird little man. Very thin skinned and known to berate constituents.

hmmm.... not exactly inspiring confidence in his abilities.

You know, I really don't give a damn about Clement's spelling! I care if he does his JOB well!

This is just another one of those trivial things that those that already hate Clement for being a Tory will seize on and make into a crime against the universe.

I can just imagine what they'd do if Clement were to be found in a massage parlor when the cops had busted it for vice. Jack Layton did it and it was brushed off as a perfectly innocent coincidence. If it had have been Clement they'd have called for hanging!

It's just dumb-ass partisanship. Me, if Layton had been my electoral choice I wouldn't have cared about a massage parlor scandal either, again because it was irrelevant to his job performance.

But that's just me.

It doesn't matter whether the kid is wrong or not, the reply was inappropriate coming from a Minister. That's why e had to apologize, and we have a story.

Also that he tried to send the reply discreetly in hopes it wouldn't be found out shows something about the character of the Minister. People with sneaky, dishonourable conduct are not worthy of the public trust, or the title of office.

Oh I bet Tony can. What part of his tweet is leet speak?

Well leet speak is all about purposely misspelling words for whatever reason.

tonight = tonite.

own = pwn or qwn

No one else does either since the point of this is his thin skin and lack of smarts.

Tony is well documented to be a petulant little shit , and thats coming from someone who has benfitted large from Tony's dubious (if not illegal) spending in his ward. He is a prickly little shit who is slightly more interesting than watching paint dry.

Leet is using numbers in place of letters, perhaps the interpretation has expanded.

It's pretty clear that Clement was using the language of the internet, of texting and so on when he used "ur" instead of "you are".

As such, there is more poetic license with spelling things such as "tonight" "don't know" and so on.

All in all, this is yet another non controversy, although I'm glad to see Clement being responsive in some way.

Looks like someone has a new patronizing catch phrase !

Then what a lame ass point! This is all ad hominem! Attacking the man because you hate his politics!

He's a politician! They're ALL "petulant little shits"! Although I've personally had supper in a Kelsey's with Clement and found him nothing of the sort!

They're politicians! Are you new, guyser? When you go on like this you imply that your own preferences aren't like that. I've got news for you. I could tell stories about NDP leaders that would not just curl your hair but disgust you! And also a Liberal cabinet minister.

If you ran a business and spent all your time looking for saints instead of competent workers you'd never make that business work!

Roger that... I was surprised that Clement didn`t cower and have Baird tweet back! Baby steps I guess... first a 15 yr old twitter guy and who knows, maybe next it will be opposition MP`s with tough questions?

I see a few typos in this post. Clearly you aren't Federal Minister material.

Uh, do you remember how long the MLW thread about the massage parlour was and how harsh some of the posts were?

I don't think anyone here is saying that Clement should be fired over this or that this is proof of his incompetence or anything. It's just kind of funny.
