PARIS — UNESCO, the U.N. cultural agency, has admitted Palestine as a full member in a highly divisive bid that opponents say could harm renewed peace efforts.

U.S. lawmakers had threatened to withhold some $80 million in funding to UNESCO if it approved Palestinian membership.

Huge cheers went up in UNESCO after delegates voted to approve the membership Monday. One shouted "Long Live Palestine!" in French.

Palestinian officials are seeking full membership in the United Nations, but because that effort is expected to take some time, they separately sought membership at Paris-based UNESCO.

Well this is a step in a positive direction. If anyone has any objections over these people getting a seat and full membership should look closely at some of the other nations that have seats at the UN.

I don't think this is full blown UN membership, but is a step in the right direction. Obviously we will get a few here that disagree with this event.

The official 'Mideast peace process' seems to me to be bogged down in historical and ongoing recriminations, roadblocks and ultimatums.

It's nice to see Palestine playing hardball and going outside of that ineffective process.

While UNESCO is not the UN per se, it is influential and it's good to see this happen.

Other developments ... the UN itself is starting to play hardball with Israel too:

Palestinians feel growing alienation towards the Oslo process," said Robert Serry, the UN specia coordinator for the Middle East peace process. "I hear many voices in Ramallah that call for the dismantling of the PA and to throw the keys back to Israel."

"I don't want to sound apocalyptic- but if things go wrong don't expect the international community to bail you out," Serry said in an interview with Haaretz on Friday in his office in the UN headquarters in Jerusalem

"We will not pay the bill."

That's the first time I've heard that message clearly.

An excellent decision and long overdue.

Bob's blood pressure probably just went through the roof...

“This is all about who you represent,” Mr. Dewar (NDP) said. “We’re (NDP) talking about representing the interests of working people and everyday Canadians and they [the Conservatives] are about representing the fund managers who come in and fleece our companies and our country.

It will hurt to lose the American funding but hey! The other members have always been good for it, right?

And who needs money anyway? They can live on love!

It may be a little cliche, but yeah we could use more love in this world. Overall I am done really with the hate, no time for it.

BAM !!

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/10/31/us-could-withhold-funds-to-un-agency-after-vote-to-grant-membership-to/

The United States will not pay $60 million to a U.N. cultural and educational agency after it voted Monday to accept the Palestinian mission as a full member, triggering a U.S. requirement to cut off funds.

"We are not going to be able to continue contributing to the budget," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said. "Palestinian membership as a state in UNESCO triggers longstanding legislative restrictions which will compel the United States to refrain from making contributions to UNESCO."

Washington is required by law to cut off funding to any U.N. agency if the Palestinian Liberation Organization is granted membership in any group at the international body.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization voted 107-14 with 52 abstentions on Monday granting Palestinians full membership in the organization. The U.S. voted against the nomination. Eighty-one votes of the 173 UNESCO members were needed for full membership to be approved.

Apparently is was part of the law to cut funding if the PLO were granted membership. However it's not the PLO that was accepted, but Palestine, and I thought Hamas was in charge of Palestine?!??

I can't support Palestine or Israel, both are guilty of committing atrocities against each other

I agree with you and I'll also add there are other countries out there are just as guilty as these two, but can get away with it.

I support peace between them, and any efforts that help achieve that.

Hey, I agree! I'm an old hippy, remember? Still, the question is unanswered. What will they do if America no longer kicks in the money?

Love expends calories. It doesn't provide them!

Well the thing is that an irrelevent question anyways. If the organization is gonna get bullied by a single member threatening to withhold funds, then it has no value anyways and might as well get shut down.

I question things because I am human. And call no one my father who's no closer than a stranger

Don't they already have that fake Micky Mouse teaching all the kids to hate Jews and other non-Muslim filth?

I was thinking more in terms of local fauna...like a golden jackal wearing a suicide bomb vest. It's warm and fuzzy until the det caps go off! ;)

OTTAWA — Canada will stop making voluntary payments to the United Nations cultural agency now that the Palestinian Authority has been accepted as a full member."We're just deeply concerned with the decision that UNESCO has taken," Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said Tuesday.

Canada will continue funding UNESCO even though t doesn’t like the organization’s move to recognize a Palestinian state. But the Harper government is warning it won’t pony up more money to make up for a massive budget shortfall caused by the United States cutting off its funding to the UN Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization.
