William Ashley Posted September 29, 2011 Report Posted September 29, 2011 (edited) Commorants recently had 160+ million pumped into them for spare parts, now it seems for the last 3 years the v22 is in the sights. http://thechronicleherald.ca/Canada/1265705.html I have to say I think current models of the v22 are a bad deal they really arnt that safe, thus nOT suited for sar operations. While trw is not bad perimse I think that the v22 is a very bad model (and 30 years old) to be looking into for sar " The Joint Personnel Recovery Agency issued a report that said that a common helicopter design would be needed for both combat recovery and medical evacuation and that the V-22 would not be suitable for recovery missions because of the difficulty of hoist operations and lack of self-defense capabilities.[114]" the worst part it ain't canadian THESE things also cost 110 million a piece (atleast 50) what about http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sikorsky_S-92 note the ". The CH-148 Cyclone is a shipboard maritime helicopter variant currently under development for the Canadian Forces. From February 2009, " http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CH-148_Cyclone really though canada should be looking at companie ssuch as where are they? that is it right there no national helicopter company Edited September 29, 2011 by William Ashley Quote I was here.
Smallc Posted September 29, 2011 Report Posted September 29, 2011 If the V-22 can replace the CC-130, CC-115, and POS CH-149 (it's a good helicopter, if it would work), then so be it. Quote
bush_cheney2004 Posted September 29, 2011 Report Posted September 29, 2011 ...where are they? that is it right there no national helicopter company Dude....a "national helicopter company" is an oxymoron given Canada's past history with rotary winged aircraft. Nothing vexes Canadian procurements more than this. I don't know why, but it is just comical. Perhaps the V-22 Osprey tiltrotor VTOL is just what is needed to defy the helocopter jinx. But beware...they are very pricey! Quote Economics trumps Virtue.

But beware...they are very pricey! In my view, though I doubt such a purchase is likely, the Osprey would be an ideal replacement for all our current SAR types………..Near same payload as the Cormorant…….We wouldn’t miss the STOL capabilities of the Buff ……..And though it doesn’t have the same range as the Herc, it is capability of in-flight refuelling……….. Sure they’re pricy, but reducing aircraft types down to one from three (Well four if you count the Griffon) would realize the air force some savings……Also, going with a single type, might allow us to reduce the number of dedicated SAR platforms……They’re the natural replacement in many roles for both the Herc and Phrog in USMC service, incidentally, those to types were our SAR mainstays for decades…… Quote
Smallc Posted September 30, 2011 Report Posted September 30, 2011 It wouldn't surprise me at all if we bought the V-22, and kept the CH-149 for a time along side them. Quote

I don’t know………I’d put money on them buying C-27.………….That being said, if it were up to me, the RCAF would get out of SAR………..give it to the Coast Guard and/or sub-contractors…. Quote
