WWWTT, I am questioning why a Chinese journalist responded to flirts of a Canadian politician. I suspect that it had nothing to do with blue eyes and everything to do with his position. Politicians and public servants should know that many people - Chinese or otherwise - want to be friends with them because of their position, and that's all.

If politicians and public servants don't know this every minute of the day, then we, the public, should rudely awake them to the fact if they think otherwise.

BTW, I don't know if Dechert, or you, have blue eyes. But I know that Dechert doesn't work at Chapters. Maybe you do, and your wife loves you for the good man that you are.

Did you think I did not read what you had written?

It is not against the law to be aroused or intreagued by someone, regardless of race or gender(this is a fact and please do not read too much into this statement).

Did you ever consider this possibility?

The emails between them that I have heard between them do show he expressed in detail more affection for her than she for him.

But if you understood Chinese culture you would know how sexually conservative Chinese people can be(P.R.C).

Aswell you do not know either party, their spouces, friends or anybody remotely associated so what you are proposing is speculation and opinion!

If this politician was using his position to get into bed with someone then I do not believe he/she is the first.

Do you think Mick Jagger or Rod Stewart would have so many lovers if they worked at any other regular job?

Is it any of mine or your business that an individual in politics chooses how to conduct their private life?

What gets me is that the conservatives would use an issue like this to their advantage if it was a liberal or NDP politician involved. And as far as I am concerned this is another example of hippocrocy the conservative party is famous for!

Be serious WWWTT, Mick Jagger doesn't hold a position of trust. If I don't like Rod Stewart, I don't buy his CDs.

Government members and civil servants make decisions concerning my life: for one, they have the authority to spend my money whether I want them to or not. Mick Jagger and Rod Stewart have no such authority.

But if you understood Chinese culture you would know how sexually conservative Chinese people can be(P.R.C).
IME, mainland Chinese have a very basic understanding of human relations and bodily functions. But this is neither here nor there. IMV, the PRC is a factor in this scandal but it's tangential to a larger issue.

Fine. But not if you are a government employee, or a real estate agent.

WWWTT, how would you feel if you were in the middle of a divorce and you learned that your lawyer had flirted with your ex-spouse? Or with the lawyer of your ex-spouse?

Or, imagine that you were negotiating to buy a house and you discovered that your real estate agent was sleeping with the vendor? Or the agent of the vendor?

Now then, what if your lawyer was a boring, chubby, balding 50 year old male and the vendor's agent was an attractive 30 year old? Would you believe that your lawyer was acting in your interests? Would you suspect that the vendor's agent had an angle?

----

Politicians, government members and civil servants hold a position of trust wrt the public. There should be no hint of abuse of this trust. They should not use their status for personal benefit.

IMV, we have made membership in government too easy. Maybe we should return to a world where only a few good people accept to be public servants.

Modern government service nowadays is like the Catholic Church when Savonarola and Martin Luther arrived on the scene.

IMHO, like the Catholic Church in the 15th century, governments today are facing a cataclysmic change in direction.

If Harper is confused, he should talk to Charest and Obama.

I used Mick Jagger as an example of someone who uses their celebrity to their advantage. There are countless more examples in different fields such as politics but the one I used is pretty much acceptable and common knowledge(aswell as far as I know this matter is more of a sexual nature).Political example may be Clinton or Trudeau, but I rather stay away from these because of stirring controversy here.

As far as your next comment goes,I was not aware there was a scandal involving the government(Peoples Republic of China or Canada). If there is please elaborate.Thnx.

As far as the rest of your comment,if this conservative politician has given away anything confidential or done something against the law then he should be investigated.Anything resulting from the investigation should then be further persued. If he is clear of any wrong doing then whats the problem?

Aswell you are making cross analogies that are too far seperated from what has actually occured here to have any relevance with me.

However I believe we agree that politicians should not abuse the trust we put in them(or anyone in such positions).

Ezra Levant

I agree with Levant on this one. It seems to me that public service comes with a price: one loses the right to a free private life. If private citizen Dechert wants to flirt with a Chinese journalist, then he is free to do so. But as a public servant, he lost that right.

WE have a strange standard that we put on modern politicians, the great politicians who we admire had many mistresses and other indiscretions in their personal life...

Who cares if he flirted with a journalist?

Ideology does not make good policy. Good policy comes from an analysis of options, comparison of options and selection of one option that works best in the current situation. This option is often a compromise between ideologies.

There is flirting, and flirting.
Who cares if he flirted with a journalist?
Did JFK flirt with a Soviet journalist?

Did a Soviet journalist answer the flirts of a minor staffer in the JFK White House?

How far Western ethics have fallen. I think that I will retire to a Balkan hilltop.

Are you saying that the Canada - China relationship is like the USSR - US relationship?

At least insofar as any journalist for a Chinese news agency who cozies up to a Canadian political figure has to be presumed to be at least a possible Chinese intelligence asset.

They aren't at all analogous.

Yes, I am.

IOW, "Chinese government people" want to know more about Canadian government/important people. But then, IMHO, the "Chinese government people" are remarkably ignorant about who-to-know in Canada or the West in general - but that's another issue.

I'm just trying to

understand your position here. Anyone that's in a position of trust and single, should not get into a relationship? Or is it just that they shouldn't get into relationships with people from foreign countries? Or just certain foreign countries? I'm not clear here. It seems like you're making the suggestion that this Chinese woman is a prostitute for foreign information and Dechert is unprofessional enough to buy her affections with sensitive information. Am I reading your posts wrong?
