Remiel Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 Have you heard of the Roman empire? Have you ever heard of a lot of crap that happened between 476 and 1871? Modern Italy is not the Roman Empire, and the culture of the former is not the culture of the latter. Quote
CPCFTW Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 (edited) Have you ever heard of a lot of crap that happened between 476 and 1871? Modern Italy is not the Roman Empire, and the culture of the former is not the culture of the latter. So the residual cultural effect of being a superpower for over 5 centuries is still being felt 15 centuries later? Wow my argument was pretty accurate, thanks for bringing up that example. A hundred years from now, there will remain a loyal following of the NB poet Alden Nowlan. It might be only a few thousand people, but it could be much more. Wow my argument was pretty accurate, thanks for bringing up that example. Not only do you manage to make another completely unsupported jump from the power of Rome to Italy's culture being entirely dependant on it, but you also manage to demonstrate how you have no idea what "superpower" real means in the same sentence! Wow. Quote

guyser Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 Arts are supposed to hold a wide appeal. Sez you. Ron Sexsmith might not agree. If I take a shit on a piece of paper and label it art, it won't have a wide appeal, and I likely won't be able to sell my "art" for a reasonable standard of living. I can't ask the taxpayers to pay my living expenses so that I can continue to create "art" instead of getting a job. Show some talent and perhaps you could. Quote

Its not my problem you don't like the term "lefties". I'm not going to start typing "those on the left side of the political spectrum" because your e-peen shrivels up in indignation whenever your read "lefties". And while you're perched atop your self-anointed moral high ground, why not try calling out those who use much worse insults than me but happen to share the same political ideologies as you? Quote

And while you're perched atop your self-anointed moral high ground, why not try calling out those who use much worse insults than me but happen to share the same political ideologies as you? Lefties is a term that you use for those who do not agree with you, regardless of where on the political spectrum they actually happen to fall. I've noted you've called several people, who are not the least bit "leftist" thus, simply for disagreeing with you. You can't categorize people as leftist, because of one specific position they hold on one specific issue. People are not that simple to categorize. One can be fiscally conservative and socially liberal, the two are not mutually exclusive and terming someone a "leftist" is overly simplistic. I actually don't like the term right wing either, as it's often used as a self explanatory argument, and people use it to cop out of actually addressing an issue. As if to call it right wing speaks for itself. Precisely what political ideologies do I have that others supposedly share? I'm willing to bet you haven't the foggiest clue as to where I stand on almost anything let alone know who would share my political ideologies. I get it you're young and idealistic and think you've got the world figured out, or perhaps you get off on being inflammatory. Either way there is a certain level of etiquette that exists on this board, and people can disagree with one another without having to resort to being childish. There are many people I have disagreed with on many occasions on this board that I have a great deal of respect for and the discourse has always been civil. I don't want this board to turn into a CBC/CTV/ insert news media here comment board, that consists largely of buzz words and grunts. Did I even address you at all in this thread? I don't know what ideologies you share but I assume you are generally left of centre on most issues, hence you are probably a "lefty". And isn't Michael Hardner a moderator? I was more rude to him than anyone else and he just gave it back like a man. Leave the moderation to the moderators. If you're so interested in censorship, you'd be better served chaining yourself on stage at a Christie Blatchford speech than whining that I called people who are left of centre "lefties". Quote
Michael Hardner Posted May 30, 2011 Report Posted May 30, 2011 I don't see 'lefty' as a pejorative word. Also, I'm not a moderator, I'm a facilitator. That means I don't have the say as to discipline on here, I'm a poster like everyone else. The thing about MLW is that it tends to value good discourse over insults, but what that means can vary from person to person. There's no black-and-white rule that delineates feisty discussion to pointed discussion to heated discussion etc. I think it's great when posters on here point out that we need to pick up our game as DAVE_ON has. Whether or not I allow people to go after me is beside the point. I can be more lenient than others when it comes to insults against myself. In general, be better is my advice to everyone all the time. Quote Click to learn why Climate Change is caused by HUMANS Michael Hardner

I just find it funny that in the same thread that "left-leaning" posters implied I was stupid, retarded, and irrational, Dave_ON decides I crossed the line with "lefty". Not to mention that I had never even addressed him once in this thread. Acting as a pseudo-moderator wouldn't be so bad if he demonstrated some impartiality rather than blatant bias. Quote
