Shwa Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 More from Dr. Feelgood at the Star: Canada among 10 most peaceful countries Canada ranks for the first time among the world’s Top 10 most peaceful nations in a new global security assessment released Wednesday. The Global Peace Index, which measures a complex array of 23 indicators ranging from levels of militarization to internal strife, incarceration and murder rates, placed Canada 8th internationally in 2011, jumping from 14th the previous year. I dunno about Iceland being #1 though, with all those volcanic eruptions and such. But what the heck, it's an evolving "science" to determine such things... Quote

Sir Bandelot Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 We participate in the wars of oppression. What this says to me is, the world is not a peaceful place. Quote
AngusThermopyle Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 We participate in the wars of oppression. What this says to me is, the world is not a peaceful place. Are you serious? You really needed this to understand that the world is not a peacefull place? The fact that there are currently more conflicts, wars and unrest than any other recorded time in history wasn't enough to tip you off? Having spent 20 years travelling around this world of ours and participating in several conflicts has given me enough insight to understand that our country is indeed a very peacefull place to live. Tilter Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 Let's get through the first 4 years of a majority government and see how peaceful it really is. I'm glad to see your optimism about the second 4 years when you say "the FIRST 4 years" Thanks for supporting the good side  Quote
Sandy MacNab Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 This bad news must really irritate you. Yeah, especially since it happened with the CPC and Harper at the helm. Quote

Smallc Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 Longing for the more peaceful days of the 1940's? Yeah...or the 1910s....1890s...the Cold War....Korea...Viet Nam. The world isn't all that bad now. Quote

But what the heck, it's an evolving "science" to determine such things... What's volcanic eruptions got to do with this??? Your source didn't mention upheaval caused by natural disasters as a factor. Have you read that Iceland is closely followed by Japan - considering not only the powerful earthquake and tsunami it experienced, but also the nuclear catastrophe and the blow to its economy as a result of it! Well volcanoes and tsunamis weren't mentioned, which would put Canada closer to the top I think, if they were. You know, because volcanoes and tsunamis are so 'violent' and must disturb the peace a great deal. However, they are only referencing man-mad disasters that affect peace. Sort of like climate science I guess. But my mention of volcanoes was purely tongue-in-cheek and a little kick at those peacefully smug Icelanders. Quote
Saipan Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 We participate in the wars of oppression. Poor Saddam, Al-Quida and Taliban. They deserve better. Quote
Topaz Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 The reason behind my view is that Harper has complete power and we have the Health Care issue coming up and today I already have heard on the news that Canadians may have to start paying for their own healthcare in co-payments. Since Harper has said in the past that provinces should rise their own money, one has to wonder if Harper will go that route and then how many Canadian without jobs, low income or even middle income can afford to pay out of pocket? Quote
GostHacked Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 But my mention of volcanoes was purely tongue-in-cheek and a little kick at those peacefully smug Icelanders. Iceland just told the International Bankers to go pound sand. That gets huge props in my books. It is peacefull in Canada. But I am afraid that is coming to an end, possibly next 5-10 years. Quote
Sir Bandelot Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 Are you serious? You really needed this to understand that the world is not a peacefull place? No. I already understood that. My comment takes a shot at our country because, I wanted to point out we are less 'peaceful' towards others now than we've been in the past. And this is true around the world as well. The cold war was 'relatively' peaceful for a few decades, but that's over now, isn't it Angus Thermopyle Quote

Sir Bandelot Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 (edited) If we look at this assesment of the level of peace in our society, within our own borders, how does the CPC respond to it. The notion that we are among the top most peaceful nations in the world must fly in the face of their ambitous plans to get tougher on crime, and to build more prisons for all the criminals we are harboring. Since Harper has said in the past that provinces should rise their own money, one has to wonder if Harper will go that route and then how many Canadian without jobs, low income or even middle income can afford to pay out of pocket? I live in Ontario and already pay health insurance premiums that result in eligible coverage through the Ontario Health Insurance Plan. These premiums are calculated based upon income. How does this differ from "co-payments?" Quote

"...more prisons for all the criminals we are harboring." A neocons wet dream statement. Using the word "prisons" and "criminals" in a sentence is one thing, but you tied it all nicely together with illegal immigration with the suggestion of a "harbour." Well done! Once we get some tanks back from Afghanistan and those F-35s start getting delivered and we have a serviceable submarine.......
