WWWTT Posted March 30, 2011 Report Posted March 30, 2011 That was the title that the CBC has given to the coverage of Harper in front of an electric piano singing a duet with a pree teen girl(Beetle song, the title eludes me at this time) Oh man Lennon must be turning in his grave franticly trying to plug his ears. This guy is a terrible vocalist my god why does he try!Why god! Why! This guy is down right bad at vocals and is a perfect example of tone deaf! There should be an immediate reflection in the poll numbers out soon. He really should go on Canadian idol.At least there it will be immpossible to be sheltered from the public humiliation from the judges! The sirens are sweetly singing a duet and the Canadian voters are doomed! WWWTT Quote Maple Leaf Web is now worth $720.00! Down over $1,500 in less than one year! punked Posted March 30, 2011 Report Posted March 30, 2011 (edited) NO offence I vote NDP to, but the story is actually pretty heart warming. For those who haven't read it Harper went to the home of a young girl who has become a big hit on Youtube playing he piano and singing Lady Gaga songs. Harper went to meet her, hear her sing, than ask if she knew any beetles songs his favorite band. They than sang imagine together, after he sang "imagine there is no religion, he turned to the girl and said 'I'm going to get in trouble for that'". Seriously do not like the guy but the Conservatives are setting up photo ops that make him look real and he is hitting them out of the park. jefferiah Posted April 1, 2011 Report Posted April 1, 2011 (edited) Do you guys know what musicians think of people who descrate the sanctions of music with political undertones? The Beatles wrote songs that a lot of people enjoy. I am not a big fan myself. So I could care less about desecrating their music. But I realize a lot of people do like them. A lot of people enjoying the Beatles means that probably a lot of people like to sing their songs as well. Most of them are not looking for a professional music career. They are just having fun. My guess is that John Lennon would probably not be a Harper supporter, politically. Likewise, Harper might not subscribe to the political opinions of John Lennon. No matter though. A difference in political opinion does not stop a conservative politician from enjoying the art work of a more left wing musician. By the same token, when John Lennon and co. decided upon a life of making popular music, they entered a business where success is dependent upon fan base. Fans are not required to subscribe to all Lennon's opinions if they want to enjoy his music and sing a song. Also, they are not required to have amazing vocal talents when they sing along with their car radios. I have to wonder are you really serious about this. I mean are you this upset that he sang a Beatles song. And as for his talent. Who cares? I don't think he is trying to promote his musical career. Do you have a similar reaction when a left-wing minded person quotes Jack Kerouac, who was a conservative? WWWTT This might surprise you but if you think about it, I'm actually agreeing with you! Harper does suck as a singer and karaoke also sucks! There, I agree with you! However, that's not the point. Any real musician hates karaoke as much as they hated disco back in the 70's. So what? Huge numbers of ordinary people LOVE karaoke! And in this country, they vote! No one expects every amateur singer at a family holiday or a Saturday Nite Pub Singalong to be great! As long as they're adequate the crowd enjoys themselves and loves the performer for trying. Harper was not auditioning for Canadian Idol. He was trying make a connection as an ordinary guy among ordinary people and largely he succeeded. I've noticed a blind spot amongst many of my musician friends over the years. They think that their road to success comes from more and more perfecting of their musical chops, that somehow if they can get over a certain bar of musical technical perfection they will instantly become stars! They self-produce CD after CD, spending small fortunes on the equipment involved and practicing scales till their fingers drop off. Sadly, for most of them it's a futile effort! Perfection of technique only counts in school! To the general public, they don't actually want a great musician as much as they want a good entertainer! A catchy but simple song like the Knack's "My Sharona" sold millions, while costing only $600 to produce, in the days before cheap digital studios. Stompin' Tom sold far more records than Captain Beefheart! Joe Satriani only attracts other musical purists. You can be a musical snob to Harper all you want but meanwhile he's stealing your audience! Don't mistake me, I cringed when I heard him too but I'm objective enough to know a working marketing technique when I see one. It could be worse. Wait till Rae drags out his old original song "We're In the Same Boat Now!" If you haven't already heard it, make sure you have your tv remote in your hand so you can hurriedly switch channels. Otherwise, you will find yourself re-enacting those scenes from the "Airplane!" movies, where some finds himself seated beside someone who is telling such a boring story that the person tries to kill themself to escape hearing it!
