bush_cheney2004 Posted August 6, 2011 Report Posted August 6, 2011 The U.S. will have to raise the debt ceiling to pay for current obligations; the question then might be are they going to actually be able to do the actual borrowing, or will money have to be created magically and risk fueling inflation if U.S. bond holders start selling out. The US will be able to sell bonds for a very long time, a lowered debt rating just means it will cost more. The rating(s) will not go as low as Canada's did in the 1990's, which also was able to continue financing debt. Quote Economics trumps Virtue.
punked Posted August 6, 2011 Report Posted August 6, 2011 That's all I'm saying....Germany obviously is not and certainly has not been an economic or political utopia, and holding it out as a great example is problematic. A "Golden Decade" only lasts ten years. No we agree there is no "model" country. I also think every country needs to do what is best for them, and maybe paying no taxes is great for the USA. Time will tell. Quote
bush_cheney2004 Posted August 6, 2011 Report Posted August 6, 2011 No we agree there is no "model" country. I also think every country needs to do what is best for them, and maybe paying no taxes is great for the USA. Time will tell. The US presently pays less taxes, not "no taxes", and based on its position in the world, it certainly has yielded many benefits. Historically, the Americans have paid for many things domestic and international as well from wars to Marshall plans. Quote Economics trumps Virtue.
WIP Posted August 6, 2011 Report Posted August 6, 2011 Doesn't matter...you will still go American more than not. Your world is dominated by Americana at many different levels by your own pathetic admission, and that does not apply to everyone else. No wonder you hate the place while being so dependent on it by your own choice. It will be even a more important issue a few decades from now, when millions of Americans start 'hating' their country and move north and claim ours! Quote Anybody who believers exponential growth can go on forever in a finite world is either a madman or an economist. -- Kenneth Boulding, 1973

Mexicans already do this...they prefer the US over Canada (for now). 25,000 Canadian emigres to America each year says they agree with the Mexicans. Quote Economics trumps Virtue.

Somehow I don't see that happening, but in the event that it does, how about we trade for all the Canadians who would prefer to be Americans? We'll call it a wash. Quote

No, there is plenty of "poor white trash" in Canada. The wealthy Canadians move to America to escape high taxes! Quote Economics trumps Virtue.

Oleg Bach Posted August 6, 2011 Report Posted August 6, 2011 Hey, I've been telling you guys for years that John Lennon was laughable telling us to Imagine from the back seat of a Rolls Royce Phantom V in Montreal. He would sing that commie tune ---cry about how his daddy left him - and how he desperately needs a woman that is a mother...all the while he would send a few bucks on the sly to the IRA - As for the Beatles in general it was George Martin to revitalized the English Music Hall tradtion via the Beatles - All the jerks who would blow a dube and lean back believing that the Beatles had the answer to life were common dupes - Listening to the stuff now - 90% was overly produced jibberish....as for George Harrison and his spiritual quest - I often wonder why Christianity was not good enough for him - and it was not surprising when someone broke into his house and gave him a poke with an edged weapon...that whole era was actually a great diservice to society at large. Besides - imagine all the greats who had real tunes at Motown - who never got heard because they were swarmed out of the buisness - the Beatles and George the aristocrat Martin duped the world and harmed good and real music. Oleg Bach Posted August 6, 2011 Report Posted August 6, 2011 Motown? No way...I'm a Stax guy! You are old _ I met some of the old record executives from that era..when I worked as a lighting standin for the band - during Blues Brothers 2000 - what an experience - Dan Akaroid shipped all the forgotten greats up for a few weaks - I had lunch with them all - most were poor - but the record guys who owned the labels did well - It was my birthday - I was sitting at the key board as they were setting up - I looked around and there they were - a dozen of the greatest players - BB king was in the corner...and Clapton to the left....what a privledge - some of the absure black rythm players were there.....soooooo cooool....again - what a privledge to get to know them...I would say it was the tail end of my lark in the movie buisness...and it ended on a high note... Scotty Posted August 6, 2011 Report Posted August 6, 2011 Check Germany's historical unemployment rates and GDP per-capita, which presently trails both the US and Canada. BMW now has plants in US right-to-work states. By 'historical data' you mean, of course, the period since reunification. I wonder what would have happened to the U.S. economy in 1990 if it had absorbed a country with a population of fifty million people whose industries and infrastructure were two generations behind the rest of the country, and whose people were not trained in modern, technical employment skills. Prior to that the Germans had to institute a guest worker program because they had such high employment they didn't have enough people to supply their voracious industrial machine. Quote It is an inverted moral calculus that tries to persuade the world to demonize one state that tries its civilized best to abide in a difficult time and place, and rides merrily by the examples and practices of dozens of states and leaderships that drop into brutality every day without a twinge of regret or a whisper of condemnation. - Rex Murphy

Funny how a guy like your dad assisted in the creation of a person like you...then again - Music is math..the slide rule pawn shop comment is up to snuff...You never fail with the clever quips---one of my daughters called and asked "Hey dad wanna be a normal regular guy and go to the movies with me?" Just to lazy to step out the door - but - I should ----------sounds like your dad was a bit of a hard case - I was not as notorious as he - but close.. Only thing that kept me above water was in the fact that my father was a Captain - and he did give me a sense of military order...how he is a very interesting story...I was 18 when he passed - He was tough - but he sure did love me - and I miss him to this day ----------nice of you to share a hint of your personal past...always enjoyed our communication....I would safely say - I am so pleased when you give me some time...thanks - and now I am going to the sub-channel called my life...cheers BC...say hello - and send my love to all --------------movies? awh...be a regular guy...why not?
