jbg Posted January 10, 2011 Author Report Posted January 10, 2011 I'm still waiting for the name of the one war that the US won on their own. Spanish-American War, Mexican-American War. I'm sure there are others. Quote Free speech: "You can say what you want, but I don't have to lend you my megaphone." Always remember that when you are in the right you can afford to keep your temper, and when you are in the wrong you cannot afford to lose it. - J.J. Reynolds. Will the steps anyone is proposing to fight "climate change" reduce a single temperature, by a single degree, at a single location? The mantra of "world opinion" or the views of the "international community" betrays flabby and weak reasoning (link).
Guest TrueMetis Posted January 10, 2011 Report Posted January 10, 2011 Spanish-American War, Mexican-American War. I'm sure there are others. A quick Google search reveals that in the Spanish-American war you had help from Puerto Rican separatists, Cuban separatists, and the Katipunan. You're right about the Mexican-American war though, so there's the one I guess. Quote
dre Posted January 10, 2011 Report Posted January 10, 2011 Even though I am quite the flag-waver I acknowledge that slavery, the treatment of Natives and the exclusion of Jews during the Holocaust, among others, are major blots on our history. There are far fewer Canadian flags on display on the average residential street than American flags. The American Revolutionary War, the War of 1812 and the American Civil War. There are far fewer Canadian flags on display on the average residential street than American flags. Good! Patriotism is crowd control. Youre paying a COMPLIMENT to Canadians by pointing this out. There are American flags proudly displayed on Canadian residential streets? That would be consistent with the Canadian flags I see displayed on American residential streets....like my neighbOUR's. That's akin to saying that the Allies didn't win World War I because the ultimate conclusion was a mutiny by German troops. Clearly the U.S. was the main mover and the Puerto Rican and Cuban separatists were helpless without our taking the offensive and the laboring oar. Indeed...but the ultimate goal is to diminish the US in this instance while elevating the US as a "rogue power"....wanting to have it both ways. Quote Economics trumps Virtue.
WIP Posted January 10, 2011 Report Posted January 10, 2011 Not Sharia, but presumably if we opted out of having individual nations and instead looked at some system of world government, then the people of much more backward regions would necessarily have some say over these world policies (presuming that the government retained some semblance of democracy). If you look at the UN general assembly and many of its committees, it is very heavily influenced by nonsensical third world beliefs and ideas. The same would have to be expected out of any world body. Nonsensical beliefs like the demands of third world nations that first worlders who have and continue to produce the most greenhouse gases, do something about their emissions and pay for damages that are reeking havoc in mostly poor countries that have the misfortune of living within 30 degrees of the Equator perhaps? Some of their ideas seem very sensible to me. Back in 1968, when Apollo 8 astronauts took the first video images of the Earth from Space, it seemed like it could have been the beginning for a sense of nationalism that would include the whole planet. This is the only kind of nationalism that would be useful today. Other lame nationalistic appeals that have their root in the human instinct for tribalism, need to be diminished if the human race survives the next few generations. Quote Anybody who believers exponential growth can go on forever in a finite world is either a madman or an economist. -- Kenneth Boulding, 1973
bush_cheney2004 Posted January 10, 2011 Report Posted January 10, 2011 (edited) ...Back in 1968, when Apollo 8 astronauts took the first video images of the Earth from Space, it seemed like it could have been the beginning for a sense of nationalism that would include the whole planet. Technically, the first "video images" of Earth from space were taken by TIROS-1 in 1960. Many other images of the Earth were taken before 1968, including black & white stills from a captured V-2 launched at New Mexico by the US Army in 1946. Any sense of global nationalism was a thin veneer obscuring the true purpose of Cold War imaging and spying. Quite to the contrary, the "human race" has advanced rapidly expressly because of tribalism and competition. May it never end. Yukon Jack Posted January 10, 2011 Report Posted January 10, 2011 Something better came along after the Berlin Wall fell, called "Globalization" for lack of a better word. The neolithic period was important too, but no one is suggesting we retain cuneiform writing. Globalization is something better? Just wait until someone in authority from Rwanda or Sudan or Burkina Faso or Thailand tells you how to live your life as a Canadian. Quote
