The CBC is searching for Canada's greatest volunteer....

http://www.cbc.ca/change/nominate-success.html

I nominated the Canadian Soldier. I had to fudge some of the query boxes...

When asked if the nominee had received any awards...

http://news.gc.ca/web/article-eng.do?m=/index&nid=537019

but if enough of us send it in, perhaps they will notice...

Ummmm. Canadian soldiers are paid professionals arent they? Im certain many of them are fantastic people, worthy of all sorts of awards... But they are not volunteers any more than people who work at Macdonals or Walmart.

Notice that we dont know what "volunteer" means?

Other than the first two years of being a private, not really.

Compared to what?

Pvt (highest paid) $3911 per month

Constable, Toronto $10400 per month

Sergent $6273 per month

Sargent, Toronto Police $11,760

And you don't automatically become a cpl after 2 years either...

You automatically become a corporal after 4 years, from what I remember...but yes, some police get paid large salaries. We spend about half of the defence budget on personnel, though. It isn't as if we're skimping. The highest paid privates are making above the national average in terms of salary.

ya, imagine not buying into your support the troops refrain - go figure!

Yeah. Imagine that? Being called superficial by a guy that just nominated "The Troops" for a volunteer award? :D

In any case by his standards virtually EVERYONE whos employed is a "volunteer" as long as they willingly signed up for the job

The term volunteer is now a polically correct adjective that creates the effect of fulfilling some noble cause...much like our Mike Harris inspired welfare system ...where they ask you to "volunteer" at say some law firm doing mundane computer filing..they offer you ten bucks for lunch..but no pay...and if you refuse to "volunteer"...they cut of your meger allowance and force you into the street...There is really no such thing these days as "volunteers" - MOST of our military, just like the American one consists of people from the bottom of the social economic strata...They "volunteer" because they are poor..and have no choice..or they are uneducated and not from privledged back grounds...So you can use the word "volunteer" all you want, but in most cases these days it is just common indirect coercion.
