GostHacked Posted September 27, 2010 Report Posted September 27, 2010 Even if I make double-time???? Bah... the bible is just a GUIDE.... it's not like anyone takes that stuff seriously... It's ok to pick and choose stuff out of the Bible that suits the church (or the individual) and ignore the rest if it is inconvenient. Although I do like the idea of a sabbath day. One day off for everyone everywhere. We live in an almost 24/7/365 workcycle. I think people would be able to relax some if there is one day that no one works. Wonder what that can do for stress, health, ect ect. I work full time, and on call all the time. My sister has been running her own business for the past few years and we don't get together as much as we should. No sunday shopping should have stayed that way /rant. Quote
Jack Weber Posted September 27, 2010 Report Posted September 27, 2010 (edited) scary bible quotes that one must assume come directly from god... Deuteronomy 7:1-2 When the Lord your God brings you into the land you are entering to possess and drives out before you many nations . . . then you must destroy them totally. Make no treaty with them, and show them no mercy. 20:10-17 When you march up to attack a city, make its people an offer of peace. If they accept and open their gates, all the people in it shall be subject to forced labor and shall work for you. If they refuse to make peace and they engage you in battle, lay siege to that city. When the Lord your God delivers it into your hand, put to the sword all the men in it. As for the women, the children, the livestock and everything else in the city, you may take these as plunder for yourselves. . . . This is how you are to treat all the cities that are at a distance from you and do not belong to the nations nearby. However, in the cities of the nations the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, do not leave alive anything that breathes. Completely destroy themthe Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusitesas the Lord your God has commanded you. even more scary bible quotes Leviticus 20:9 If anyone curses his father or mother, he must be put to death. 20:10 If a man commits adultery with another mans wifewith the wife of his neighborboth the adulterer and the adulteress must be put to death. 20:13 If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death. Deuteronomy 22:20-1 If, however, the charge is true and no proof of the girls virginity can be found, she shall be brought to the door of her fathers house and there the men of her town shall stone her to death. She has done a disgraceful thing in Israel by being promiscuous while still in her fathers house. Exodus 35:2 For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day shall be your holy day, a Sabbath of rest to the LORD. Whoever does any work on it must be put to death. The Old Testament is fairly stark and unequivocal,is'nt it??? Of course,we've been given a New Covenant which supercedes the old one... Which again makes me ask the question of any tyrant of the last 2000(or so) years that kills in the name of God... Is it God doing the killing,or is it the bloodthirsty tyrant using God's name as convenient cover?? Edited September 27, 2010 by Jack Weber Quote The beatings will continue until morale improves!!!
ToadBrother Posted September 28, 2010 Report Posted September 28, 2010 The Old Testament is fairly stark and unequivocal,is'nt it??? Of course,we've been given a New Covenant which supercedes the old one... With the caveat that any particular passage from the OT can be reinvoked if societal prejudices require it, ie. keeping slaves (actually, even the NT seems to approve of that providing the owner is a decent kindly sort), abusing homosexuals, going after witches, etc. Which again makes me ask the question of any tyrant of the last 2000(or so) years that kills in the name of God... Is it God doing the killing,or is it the bloodthirsty tyrant using God's name as convenient cover?? Scarcely maters to the guy with the sword hanging over his head. Quote

That all depends on who's doing the reinvoking, does'nt it? And as far as the secong statement goes...Very true, however,it does'nt really answer the question... bloodyminded Posted September 28, 2010 Report Posted September 28, 2010 Which again makes me ask the question of any tyrant of the last 2000(or so) years that kills in the name of God... Is it God doing the killing,or is it the bloodthirsty tyrant using God's name as convenient cover?? I'm not a believer, but God--whether he exists or not--is not to blame. However, thsoe using god as a convenient cover are less disturbing (to me, anyway) than those who are sincere in their blood-drenched faith. Though in the end, as Toadbrother says in a slightly different context, to the victims it scarcely matters at all.
